If this is the case, I wonder how many babies these "married women" had that were Joseph's? I've heard of a few claims, but not many.

I have his book. I don't recall him denying this charge (I can look again), nor the charge that he had abandoned without divorce a wife and several kids. He was charged by church members with abortions. I don't think there is anything in the record to show whom he performed abortions upon.

After his experience with Mormons he became a very respected person -- a tomato and pigeon geneticist of some published note. Moreover, his obtaining the Nauvoo Charter from the Illinois legislature was truly a masterpiece of lobbying and lawyering. This single act had more of an effect of strengthening Nauvoo than anything else, in my opinion, other than immigration.

What a little Peyton Place! Abortions. Prostitution. Adultery. Fornication. Nauvoo must have been a very interesting place to observe, what with all the sneaking around going on. And our dear "prophet" right in the middle of it all.

That's right, harmony. Swallow it whole -- hook, line, and sinker. You like the taste of it, don't you? I'm sure almost everyone here does. Sarah has served up a dish that will gratify all of your deepest suspicions and voyeuristic cravings. One can almost hear you all smacking your lips as you tuck your napkins and raise your forks.

Poor Sarah Pratt. Had herself one hell of a fling with Johnny B; turned it loose like she never thought she could -- for a fortnight at least. Then she spent the rest of her life hiding her self-recrimination behind a facade of righteous indignation.

But she could craft a naughty tale with the best of them. Too bad she was born a hundred years too early, she would have made Jacqueline Susann look like a prudish amateur.

Now, Belinda Pratt, on the other hand: there was a woman worthy of a good man . . .
... every man walketh in his own way, and after the image of his own god, whose image is in the likeness of the world, and whose substance is that of an idol ...

What's the point of all those carefully crafted flowers of rhetoric? It works just as well the other way:

That's right, Schryver. Turn up your nose at it -- all that nourishing honest fact. You hate the taste of it, don't you? I'm sure almost everyone from MAD does. Sarah has served up a dish that will fulfil all of your deepest fears and prudish dislikes. One can almost see you all putting your fingers down your throats as you clutch a towel to your faces and grope for the vomit-bag.

Neither paragraph proves anything, except about the person who wrote it, if that is the best he can offer by way of reply.

Just get on and state your case, and those of us interested can discuss it.

Who knows what the truth behind all this was. But Harmony is right, even if Sarah's story is partly fabricated (and I certainly don't know if any was) - it was a peyton place. All those whores from their mother's breasts, all those fornicating women making up malicious lies about pure Joseph. Why, it's not his fault that God sent an angel with a sword to make him get busy with some more wives!! It's not his fault Emma was such a wicked woman he had to do it behind her back. It's not his fault that God wanted him to marry women that had inconvenient pre-existing husbands. It's not his fault that apparently god tricked him by sending warm and fuzzy thoughts about an abortionist and sexual predator - enough to make him his number one adviser. Joseph was just doing what the Lord God Almighty, creator of the universe, commanded him to do! Get more women!!!

Come on, chap, don't deprive Will of a moment hamming it up in the spotlight. Just imagine the applause in his mind!!

Yes. Since Will claimed that he would only come back to this board if he was bored, we can only assume he's bored again. Frankly, I hope he gets a hobby soon.

Oh come on now Beastie and Liz...where is your sense of humor?!?

I'm sure Will is just joking around.

Oh, and Runtu, great stuff!

Wasn't she the one that took the 116 pages and called BS on Joseph Smith in the first place?

What a good woman to put up with her husbands idiocy through all of this. She saw it so clearly for the sham that it was.

Now, my dear boy, it's not about joking, it's about performance art.

I think you're thinking of Lucy Harris. But Martin beat some sense into her, anyway.
