Admittedly I no longer read a lot of posts at MAD, so those of you who follow it more closely may know this answer. I don't recall seeing critics using words like "pedophile" over there to begin with. Am I incorrect?

Hi There Beastie,

I just started recently to read a lot of the Posts on the MA&D Message Board again. I do Not see any LDS critic over there referring to Joseph Smith as a 'pedophile'. Even in the Past when I read the MA&D Message Board a lot I don't really recall ever reading a Post from a LDS Critic over there referring to Joseph Smith as a 'pedophile'.
Anyway, I strongly believe that you are Not incorrect.

There has been a recent onslaught of new posters at MAD, most likely because of Romney.

Some of these are rather brash with their characterizations of Joseph Smith.

I hate that they are lumped in with "the critics".

Have any of these new posters labeled Joseph Smith a pedophile? This is something you often see at RFM and sometimes here, but I don't recall seeing it at FAIR or MAD.

I read the Helen Mar thread that seemed to trigger skylla's comments, and there was no statement on that thread that I recall that contained incendiary language like "pedophile".

Is it possible to have a thread about HKM without pedophilia creeping in somewhere?? :P

Hi Blixa,

This exemplifies a style of "discussion" I think is encouraged at MAD; it proceeds from an unspoken and perhaps largely unconscious series of prior exclusions of topics as not open to discussion. From this position, I honestly think what constitutes "polite, scholarly and respectful discussion" is unintelligible and impossible.

I'm right with you! :-)

I find myself shaking my head in wonder at times, trying to figure out how, discussing behavior equates to hating an individual, how sharing ideas means one is trying to destroy the church, how expressing an opinion is interpreted as declaring an absolute claim.

As you stated, at times, "polite, scholarly and respectful discussion" seems nearly impossible.

I feel like I could say, "I love sunshine," and to some it becomes, "I hate everyone who lives in Seattle." :-)

Yes. But one would first have to admit secular discussion of religious figures, themes and ideas.

After being mostly inactive over there for quite a few months, I spent way too much time over there in the last few days. I didn't participate in many threads, but participated a lot in a couple that I started. It takes too much time when I get into it like that. I've got some projects I am working on here at home (one of my hobbies is amateur instrument making - I'm currently making my 3rd violin and my 1st cello, and just got some wood to start a solid-body electric guitar). I think I'll stay away from MAD for a while (again), and depending on how things go here, I may or may not be posting much. It kind of goes in cycles with me, depending on the threads, and whether we're all talked out on the subjects that interest me the most, etc.
Mormonism ceased being a compelling topic for me when I finally came to terms with its transformation from a personality cult into a combination of a real estate company, a SuperPac, and Westboro Baptist Church. - Kishkumen
