permanent health changes for RMs church's liability?
I was just thinking about liability in organizations. What about missionary service? Some missionaries get some nice souveniers while in the field (tapeworms, viruses, etc.). If any of these permanently effect the health of the missionary, should the church be held liable? Would you answer differently for non-permanent health issues?

Curious, but could the untimely confiscation of you appendix have been avioded had you not served a mission?
Judging by dietary habits, stress levels and other factors contributing to a heightened sensitivity to staph infections, possibly.
Hate to bring this up too, but I got addicted to painkillers as a result of having easy access to pills after the surgery combined with a lengthy recovery process. I had recovered and had all these pills and methods to gain more. A month after I had recovered I popped one and discovered that I didn't feel any of the depression and anxiety that came with living up to false expectations.
I didn't even know what withdrawal was when I was a basket case for two weeks after running out of refills.
Up until a few years ago I still struggled with addiction to painkillers. I got hooked emotionally and physically to painkillers while on my mission.

I have permanent damage to my intestines from the parasites I picked up in Bolivia. I'll live with it the rest of my life. One of my kids once asked my wife "Why does daddy always get tummy aches?" "Because he got sick on his mission."
But do I want anything from the church? No. I went to Bolivia because I wanted to. I don't think I quite understood the risks when I went, but that's life. I don't hold the church responsible.

Maybe that's what Jesus had in mind in Mark 9:44, 46, 48 when He said, "Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched."

In my mission, almost every missionary has at least one picture of a worm he or she passed, usually next to a ruler or a pencil. Ewwww.

It was missions like yours that I feared as a teen. And so I was positive God would send me there, just to teach me humility. But it turns out God doesn't actually send anyone anywhere, and the LDS church apparently was in need of German speakers, so I got to go to Switzerland instead. Sorry, didn't get any stomach worms there. Just didn't baptize anyone either. I guess they all had their tradeoffs. About the worst food I ever had to eat was cold corn with some kind of vinegar sauce. The Europeans got corn from the Americas, but they didn't get the memo that came with it explaining how it ought to be eaten. Cold freaking corn with vinegar sauce. Ick.
Mormonism ceased being a compelling topic for me when I finally came to terms with its transformation from a personality cult into a combination of a real estate company, a SuperPac, and Westboro Baptist Church. - Kishkumen
