Just how are tobacco leaves used to treat bruises?

By mashing into a poultice and applying directly. I doubt its as useful a remedy as arnica, though. I can't speak to the use of vetrinary tobacco. Perhaps there are some cowherds here who can?

The irony is if the WoW hadn't prohibited hot drinks, the people would have been healthier. The net effect on the saints in those days was negative.

Is this a common practice, to use tobacco as a poultice on bruises and cattle? I ask, because I have never heard anyone using it for such a thing, and in fact, if the Lord God Almighty is going to offer sage advice, why would He offer up advice that would be little used or of little use?

Yeah, that's my question. Boiling water would have been HUGE back then. But, God was mysteriously silent about it...

My understanding is that this was a common natural treatment for bruising during the early nineteenth century. (Not that I am an expert but I spent a few years studying medicinal herbs at the School of Natural Healing).

Dancer, just curious is that the School of Natural Healing founded by John R. Christopher?
I think it would be morally right to lie about your religion to edit the article favorably.

Let the sick and afflicted drink from the sacramental wine cup last.

Don't poo where you draw water.

Wash your hands.

Can you imagine how many would have survived the first years of Nauvoo and even the exodus?

I would have gladly welcomed booze and tobacco over these little plague starters.
