For those who attended BYU
I'm wondering how many posters and/or lurkers here attended BYU and where they stand with regards to the church. You don't have to post which choice you made if you don't want to.
For this poll:
believer = one who attends church regularly and accepts most of the tenets of Mormonism (may question a few things, like the polygamy issue)
critic = one who no longer attends church, exmormon, or attends but doesn't believe most of the tenets of Mormonism
I chose the graduated from BYU and critic option.

I need to change my vote. According to your definitions, I should have voted "Graduated from BYU and Believer".
I voted "Graduated from BYU and Critic" before reading your definitions. I was too quick on the draw.
I disagree with the polygamy tenet and several others, but I am an active Church member.

LOL! You and I were at BYU at the same time. So close and yet so far. Pity.
;)
I do remember feeling some apostate vibe coming from one of the girls' dorms at DT that fall. Which one were you in? ;)

The only thing that is more likely is that one would stay a virgin at BYU - oh, that and pay outrageous rent for such high density housing.

Hmmm. If Liz was there when you were there, maybe I was there.
When were you there, Liz (you can PM if it's too much in real life information)?
I may be going to hell in a bucket, babe / But at least I'm enjoying the ride.

For those who went to BYU and ended up a "critic," do you think that your BYU experience was a contributing force, or would it have happened regardless of university?
If it was the BYU experience, to what do you attribute it to exactly? Was it the culture? Was it being amongst a high populous of LDS? Was it (*gasp*) that the education at BYU was highly effective at providing you critical thinking skills (or not good enough I guess from a “believer’s” POV)?
[edited for typo]

I don't think that BYU contributed to my "fall" to apostate status at all. On the contrary, it probably strengthened me in various ways. I was TBM there, and although I would resent things like the nazi beard ban and the parking nazis, I don't think I could put my finger on anything at BYU that weakened my faith or made me more susceptible to the apostate truth about the church.
Mormonism ceased being a compelling topic for me when I finally came to terms with its transformation from a personality cult into a combination of a real estate company, a SuperPac, and Westboro Baptist Church. - Kishkumen
