That verse says nothing about polygamy.

Gazelam wrote:What is abominable to him form of marriage is when the relationship is motivated by lust, or when it robs one's wife of her personhood and reduces her to the level of a thing to be used, mistreated, manipulated, or whimsically abandoned. In that regard, some monogomous marriages among us are abominable.

True marriage, and true polygamy, is practiced when a priesthood holder seals his name upon his loved ones and honors them by practicing and teaching the commandments of Christ. It is found in the leadership of honoring and directing the making and keeping of sacred covenants. This sealing and honoring of sacred names is expanded in the practice of plural families.

Wow! Is this how you actually see polygamy as it was practiced in Joseph Smith and BY's day??? That these wives were loved and cherished??

I hate to break it to you, Gaz, but Joseph Smith and BY practiced polygamy in the "abominable" way you described.

Those wives were reduced to the level of a thing to be used, mistreated, manipulated, and whimsically abandoned.

Hi Gazelam,

The brother of Jared did Not have more than one wife. The Following are two Post from Don, and from me the Brackite, from the "FAIR"/MA&D Message Board:

"Families" in the Book of Ether is an error. It appeared this way in the 1830 printing, but the manuscript on which the printing was based has "family." "Families" is thus a printer's error, and has nothing to do with polygamy.

For documentation of this, check Royal Skousen's Book of Mormon Critical Text, or search the issue out on Google.

You are very much absolutely right on on that. In the 1908 RLDS Edition of the Book of Mormon, they corrected the mistake of the word 'families' in that Scriptural Passage of Ether 1:41, to read 'family' in Ether 1:16 of their, the 1908 RLDS Edition of the Book of Mormon. The 1908 RLDS Edition made the correction to read 'family.' Here is the Ether 1:16, in the RLDS Edition of the Book of Mormon:

QUOTE
RLDS Ether 1:16:
16 And it came to pass that the Lord did hear the Brother of Jared, and had compassion upon him, and said unto him, Go to and gather together thy flocks, both male and female, of every kind; and also of the seed of the earth of every kind, and thy family; and also Jared thy brother and his family; and also thy friends and their families, and the friends of Jared and their families.

There is absolutely No evidence whatsoever that any of the righteous Jaredite men had more than one wife.

Edited to add:

It is possible that the righteous Jaredite King named 'Orihah' had more than one wife, since he had 31 children (23 sons and 8 daughters), but probably not at the same time. What probably did happen is that King Orihah first wife (who he had some children with) died kind of at a pretty young age, and then King Orihah married a second wife, and he had more children with and by her.
