Seems nepotism is alive and well in the Church. I had hoped we were moving away from this.

I don't think this will ever change as long as we keep the same system for calling people to leadership. Since callings are based on inspiration and/or gut feelings, the advantage will always go to those who are most well known by the people extending the calls. Some will become known solely because of their excellent performance as Church leaders which brings them into contact with the GA's (like President Uchtdorf), but many will become well known because of family connections.

Also, many of the traits that are looked for in GA's (gospel knowledge, good leadership skills etc.) are commonly found in an entire family; if someone's dad is very knowledgeable about the gospel and models intense dedication to the Church, then it's understandable if their children pick up some of that as well.

The only way around this would be if the Church were to consciously institute some kind of "affirmative action" program where they purposely ignore family members of existing GA's and look especially hard at people from outside of Utah and without family connections. But this would kind of go against the whole idea behind the current system, so I don't think that could ever happen.

In that past, I think there were some subtle beliefs about bloodlines and chosen lineages when it came to Church leadership, but I don't think those are common anymore.

God the Father called his Son, Jesus Christ, to head his church and kingdom on earth. Like some here, the Scribes and Pharisees had a problem with that--particularly when Christ proclaimed this truth during his mortal ministry.

I know that many of the apostles now live in assigned areas of the world for several years (well, they travel a lot, too, of course). I think this will have an impact on the leadership years down the road. Of course those leaders will have to go through being in area presidencies, the 70's and whatever else, so it won't occur immediately.

What I'm wondering is if the apostles were posted in various areas of the world for years on end in previous times? If they were, why then are there not any bigwigs from other nationalities? The explanation I can think of for this is that it has only been 20-30 years that most non-North American countries have had solid members who know exactly what is going on. Creating a culture where members live and love the gospel takes time.
