Cracking the Maya Code...

Post by _truth dancer »

Just a little heads up...

Next Tuesday NOVA is showing a program on how the Mayan language has been deciphered.

Thought y'all may be interested.

"The ancient Maya civilization of Central America left behind an intricate and mysterious hieroglyphic script, carved on monuments, painted on pottery, and drawn in handmade bark-paper books. For centuries, scholars considered it too complex to ever understand until recently, when an ingenious series of breakthroughs finally cracked the code and unleashed a torrent of new insights into the Mayas' turbulent past. For the first time, NOVA presents the epic inside story of how the decoding was done in "Cracking the Maya Code."

Thanks for the heads-up, I'll definitely watch it.

Hmm, what oh what could be holding you back financially? I wonder how you could have new access to ten percent of your income?

It's more about not particularly wanting it. After 8 hours working in my living room on my computer I have little desire to move 5 feet and stare at another screen.

I'll watch it online then.

The earliest inscriptions which are identifiably Maya date to the 3rd century BCE, and writing was in continuous use until shortly after the arrival of the Spanish conquistadores in the 16th century CE (and even later in isolated areas such as Tayasal).

Well, great! I guess the Book of Mormon story will finally be corroborated! This is very exciting news.

That was a great show. I'd already read Coe's book it was based on, but it was great to hear the live interviews of the people involved.

The one person on this board who really needed to watch that show is crocket, who insists the Maya had no written language.
