LDS Church Misrepresents the Truth in FLDS Response

Post by _the road to hana »

I'm increasingly troubled by the PR spin coming out of 50 North Temple regarding the FLDS.

This, for me, takes the cake. In an article in the Salt Lake Tribune, today (LDS Church: Monitoring FLDS Prayer Sessions Would Be Inappropriate), LDS spokesman Scott Trotter said it would be "erroneous to base any request for assistance from members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on the basis that our beliefs and practices are close to those of this polygamous group because they are not." .

I've just completely lost my patience for this, a church that touts being honest in its dealings with its fellow humans. Beliefs and practices close? Absolutely. And they need to stop saying otherwise. They need to own up to the relationship between the two and the common heritage, and even more so, in the spirit of wanting to be recognized as "Christian" by the world, and even in the spirit of just "being Christian," they should step up to the plate and act like part of the community and be their brother's keeper.
The road is beautiful, treacherous, and full of twists and turns.

They are trying to use an eye-dropper to douse a firestorm!!

They have created a world where polygamy has all but been erased from the history. Now they are faced with the impossible decision of revealing the troubling past to the current members, and running the risk of mass apostasy, or making misleading statements to the press. Apparently keeping the tithing $$$ rolling in is more important than integrity.

The phrase "hit the fan" seems to be appropriate here.

"Close" is a subjective term. I submit that FLDS and LDS are closer than Catholics and protestants (say, Lutherans), but I think that's mostly because our split is more recent.

This was the actual relevant information:

Scott Trotter, spokesman for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, said that the church has heard about the judge's request only through news reports and therefore has "no clear understanding of what, if anything, we are being invited to do."
In an e-mail statement, Trotter said it would be "erroneous to base any request for assistance from members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on the basis that our beliefs and practices are close to those of this polygamous group because they are not."
He also acknowledged that such a request would not be fair, either to the polygamous FLDS, which "long ago chose a different path from ours. In fact, many in these isolated communities view us with some hostility as part of the outside world they have rejected."

Curelom dung.

The only difference between you the LDS man and the FLDS man is that he may have more than one wife. All of the other beliefs are identical.

Once you look past the so called veil, the beliefs are exactly the same including the polygamy. Numerous LDS men have already started on the after death polygamy.

Yeah, that context definately changes it. I agree with that statement.

Do FLDS have the same prayer mantra that LDS do? You know..."Dear Heavenly Father. We thank thee for this food. Please bless it to be nourishing and strengthening to our bodies. Please bless that we will have a good day and keep us safe. Inthnamufjesuschrisamen."

Scott Trotter

As in the press mumbling under their breath, "Oooohhh boy, look what Scott is TROTTING out today!"
