I think "twit" is a vile word. I strongly advocate banning that word, too.

OK----

I have now read both this thread, and the one in Telestial that got moved.

To quote my good friend, Harmony----

Good grief!

The bottom line to me is this: There are a substantial amount of posters on the board that find the term, "retarded", offensive.

To my knowledge, those who either have children, family members, or work on a daily basis with mentally handicapped children and/or adults includes the following:

Beastie
Moniker
Truth Dancer
Jersey Girl
Liz

Out of a simple matter of respect for these long-time posters, is it simply asking too much to curtail the phrasing of the word, "retarded"?

Whether or not you, personally, find the term offensive or not, I would think that out of simple respect for other long-standing contributing posters, this is something that could be done simply out of the goodness of people's hearts.

Do we REALLY need a rule for this? Really?

We really can't be grown-ups?

I'm sorry. As far as I'm concerned, this is a sad state of affairs for the board.

I move she be immediately banned for using the r-word twice.

If someone posts "Man you're a f***ing retard", we go in and change that to "Man you're a f***ing idiot."

Also, as to where does it end?? That is a stupid argument. I think the mods here use pretty good common sense. It's not going to turn into a ban-a-thon of words. The list of changeable words will be short.

I would also propose that nigger, kike, wetback, faggot, and the like be banned as well. Those words have no place in a discussion.

Why is idiot better than retard? The both have ostensibly the same origins and meaning. I don't get it. It seems you are proposing to run this rule by how the mod "feels" about a word.

Fine. We'll just completely * out the word retard/retarded altogether.

Look, the fact is this word offends a substantial number of people on the board. Whether or not it offends you is irrelevant!

Since the posters here can't seem to keep conversations civil and keep the wishes of the board members in mind, I guess moderation is the next logical step.

I don't think it has ever happened, but if I ever catch a mod changing a single word in one of my posts, I am gone for good.

If you guys want a list of banned words, then you damn well better post that list. Each mod maintaining their own private list of offensive words is something that I just don't want to deal with.

I'm serious.

I'm not saying it will be an at-whim list of personal preference words. It will be a clearly defined list.

It's not like this doesn't have precedence. We banned using the word douche as a derogatory word.

And, like it or not, we already alter posts. We * out swear words all the time. I fixed spelling errors sometimes too.

One more thing. I would venture that 90% of everything posted on this board offends a segment of the readership. If offense is the MD standard for censorship we are in big trouble.

Offending A poster is MUCH different than offending the bulk of the participants on the board, don't you think?

Similar to what happened with the "C" word, I think the portion of the members of this board who find the two words in question uncouth is great enough that I am justified in turning on the word censor for them (i.e., "them" = "those two words").

The point Mister Scratch makes is a good one--as is the example he used--but I think the word's legitimate use as a verb happens rarely enough (especially in contrast to the amount of time it's used as a noun and as an insult) that the word censor is still justified.

Request granted.

Has anyone noticed flamed retarded material really isn't that good of a retardant? I have. I think it's retarded to think flame retarded material can retard the heat from a crazy retarded inferno.

Retarded.

No need to test it out. Just take my word that it's indexed in the auto-censor now.

Let's not clutter up the board, 'K?

Also, to the posters of the board, if you see this violation anywhere, please let a mod know via PM.

I thought it was clever, and funny.
