I think we should moderate it like we do any other swear word. We change the word.

If someone posts "Man you're a f***ing r*****", we go in and change that to "Man you're a f***ing idiot."

Also, as to where does it end?? That is a stupid argument. I think the mods here use pretty good common sense. It's not going to turn into a ban-a-thon of words. The list of changeable words will be short.

I would also propose that nigger, kike, wetback, faggot, and the like be banned as well. Those words have no place in a discussion.

Why is idiot better than r*****? The both have ostensibly the same origins and meaning. I don't get it. It seems you are proposing to run this rule by how the mod "feels" about a word.

Fine. We'll just completely * out the word r*****/r******d altogether.

Look, the fact is this word offends a substantial number of people on the board. Whether or not it offends you is irrelevant!

Since the posters here can't seem to keep conversations civil and keep the wishes of the board members in mind, I guess moderation is the next logical step.

I don't think it has ever happened, but if I ever catch a mod changing a single word in one of my posts, I am gone for good.

If you guys want a list of banned words, then you damn well better post that list. Each mod maintaining their own private list of offensive words is something that I just don't want to deal with.

I'm serious.

I'm not saying it will be an at-whim list of personal preference words. It will be a clearly defined list.

It's not like this doesn't have precedence. We banned using the word douche as a derogatory word.

And, like it or not, we already alter posts. We * out swear words all the time. I fixed spelling errors sometimes too.

I just wanted to chime in here (probably someone else has done so) and say that Scottie, when you said "change the word" in your first post above in the quotes, it makes people think we're making word substitutions and to my knowledge, we don't do that. As you say though, we do *** out most of the letters of certain words.

Similar to what happened with the "C" word, I think the portion of the members of this board who find the two words in question uncouth is great enough that I am justified in turning on the word censor for them (I.e., "them" = "those two words").

The point Mister Scratch makes is a good one--as is the example he used--but I think the word's legitimate use as a verb happens rarely enough (especially in contrast to the amount of time it's used as a noun and as an insult) that the word censor is still justified.
