I was just looking through this thread and came across Beastie's comment to me.
I'm curious Beastie, you are all up in arms protesting about some man, saying to some female, "I bet you'll look good in a t-shirt." And apparently that's your example of an offensive remark a male made. Yet you see no problem in attempting to be offensive to me? You appear to have a double standard. Why is it okay for you to be offensive and not some male? And by the way, I didn't find the line " I bet you'll look good in a t-shirt" particularly offensive. Remember this board is for entertainment purposes.
marg,
It would be helpful if you actually read the thread instead of skimming it.
This comment of mine:
In retrospect, I have no idea I would want to see marg in a tank-top. I’ll bet she's a wrinkled middle-aged woman with varicose veins and more good years behind her than ahead of her. Right? ;-)
was a direct quotation of what Will had said to liz on a previous thread. The only way you could miss this if you were reading carelessly and mainly skimming. The thread in which Will made these comments had already been linked and referred to, and I also later provided the entire context of the thread by copying large sections of it here.
The "tshirt" comment was made as a response to a serious post that KA had made on the issue being discussed -
a serious issue that had nothing to do with sex or tshirts. That you apparently don't recognize why this is offensive is strange, but hardly surprising.
We hate to seem like we don’t trust every nut with a story, but there’s evidence we can point to, and dance while shouting taunting phrases.
Me, neither. The picture with a plaid shirt, open collar is actually on his BYU profile. That's the professional image he's putting out for what is supposed to be a nationally recognized institution. Red necky I tells ya...

Plaid is only rednecky if it's flannel. Give the man some credit... he's not always dressed in a white shirt and tie.

Ok now I understand regarding the comment to me. I think the first by Will to Liz was meant to be nasty, I think the second to KA was much less so, it is partially a function of the sorts of posts she makes, her avatar of herself. In any event they are ad hominal posts. This board is riddled with posts by pepple trying to be offensive to others, whether it is based on gender stereotypes or not. That's nothing new.

I know you have to take digs at whatever you can, I understand that, but the man is wearing shirt with stripes. Plaid? Serious?

Is it too much to ask for a monsieur de rennaissance to present himself appropriately to the world? Professors are ambassadors to the world, non? Oui oui...

No professor I ever had wore a suit like that.
Good grief. Just because you don't like the way he dresses doesn't make him a red neck.

Well, no. What makes him a red neck is him being a red neck. It's patently obvious from his dress, his big fat head, and accoutrement that makes him red necky. by the way, where did you go to school? Betcha it was red necky... I can tell.
The dress of college professors is vast and ranges in my experience from jeans (and once shorts!) to full suits all the time. Isn't that what makes being a professor awesome...if you wear a suit you're being professional, but if you wear jeans and a sweatshirt you're staying in touch with your students and your not taking it too seriously. Win win right?
(There are professors on this board...how do you folks dress?)

I'm not talking about how a Professor dresses day-to-day. Geeeeeeeesh. I'm talking about their professional bio on a professional homepage. The very first look someone most likely will get of them. Red necks wear plaid on that picture. Just sayin'...
This guy looks professional. He was the first one I clicked on at Washington State University. He a Latin Studies Professor.
