Well. I have similar reasons, Schmo. These days it's interesting for me to see people defend lies and deception. I just got done reading an article detailing scientists' efforts at curing blindness. They're succeeding. There's a gene therapy cure for a form of blindness now.

Science, not religion, cures the lame, heals the sick, and performs, for all intents and purposes, miracles.

So, coming back to the point I'm interested to watch people who should know better fight and defend something that's an anachronism.

Schmo:

I read and participate on this board for similar reasons that you posted in the OP. I'm not too interested in the doctrines or beliefs of Mormonism anymore. Once in a while I'll jump in on a discussion, but I spend most of my time in the off-topic forum now. I really enjoy reading the board and following the on-line personalities of various posters. I find a lot of humor and interesting insights here. If there isn't a book about this stuff, you should write one and I'll definitely read it.

I believe PC Magazine had an article a few months back on internet dialog and personalities, etc. Sort of a psychological look at Internet dialog. If I run into it again I'll post it here. (If not PC Magazine, then it was another of those computer nerd rags.)

I’ve never denied that! You’ve just been slacking in your goddess duties to me lately, so I’ve had to turn to… um… other interests.

:)

CK, I did the blogger thing for a while too, and I agree. Not the same at all, and nowhere near as personally fulfilling or entertaining.

Antishock, watching people defend the indefensible is a huge component of it for me as well. It’s one of the most amazing human behaviors to observe that I can think of. I really should have added that to the OP.

SK, don’t tempt me! If I did write a book, it would have to be called something like Board Dynamics for Dummies by Some Sociological Dumb Schmo. Catchy, huh? No, I don’t think so either.

LoaP, I would really appreciate that. Just the type of thing I’m looking for.

by the way, where's Scratch in this thread? He's the king of meta-discussions! While I don't always agree with his conclusions, I never fail to read one of his threads about other threads. That's prime, Grade A meat right there!

I'm here to learn.

Or rather, I'm trying to un-learn a lifetime's worth of programming/brainwashing.

I lurked around for a long time before I ever posted anything.

It's all new to me, and I appreciate what I learn from all of you.

Schmo, I stayed at MAD and MDB purely for the entertainment value. When I get bored or know I can't hold my tongue any longer I walk away.

I'm people watching.

I think I still get that delivered to my house. I'll have to see if I can find that article. There's a lot that goes on behind the scenes at most boards I've ever been on. It's also interesting to meet people off the board (or talk to them) and see how different they are then the way they attempt to project themselves on-line.

I wish I could find the specific article.

Meantime, here are a few I stumbled across while searching:

Language warning.
