What Precisely Is A Jesus Freak?

Post by _Moniker »

I looked and apparently those in the 60's that were into pacifism considered themselves Jesus Freaks. Yet, I think the term has changed somewhat in the last 40 years -- I usually consider that term a slur or referring to those that twist themselves in contortions while speaking in tongues.

What is a Jesus Freak? Were you one? Are you one still? Would you like to NOT be one? Are you proud to be one?

If I understand correctly, Jesus Freaks initially formed part of a hippy-like movement in the 60s. The meaning behind the name has changed somewhat, and seems to be used today by some critics as an insult directed to fanatics and by some fanatics as a badge of honor.

Undoubtedly some are, yes. You'll find fanatics in just about every movement.

Jesus Freak likely means something slightly different to everyone who use the term. For me, it's those people who can't have a normal conversation without mentioning his name at some point.

News caster: That was an amazing throw, and an amazing catch for the winning touchdown. Can you tell us what was going through your mind during that play?

Football player: I was just trying to make the play, ya know what I mean? I just thank Jesus for being there with me, ya know what I mean?

There's an example of a Jesus freak, in my estimation. It's someone who feels guilty for their own accomplishments if they don't acknowledge Jesus at some point.

by the way, I wonder why Jesus never helped me make difficult football catches. Maybe I needed to invoke his name more often. Doesn't seem very humble of him, but whatever.

Oh, Schmo, people that invoke Jesus don't make me half as uncomfortable as those that ask me if I have Jesus in my life.

Nice lady with sticky notes sticking outta her Bible: "Moniker, do you have Jesus in your life?" Concern/intense stare

Moniker: Uncomfortable smile, "Umhummm....." *please go away*

Since I don't worship Jesus, but rather, follow him, I don't consider myself a Jesus freak.

If I understand correctly, Jesus Freaks initially formed part of a hippy-like movement in the 60s.

"Jesus Freak" as used by Evengelicals today is someone who is passionate about their faith. There are Evangelicals who would proudly call themselves this name, but that doesn't mean that they are Fundamentalist in leaning. Let us not get into the confusion between the words "Evengelical" and "Fundamentalist" that has come up on this board more than once. Not all Evangelicals are Fundamentalist, and vice versa. The Fundamentalist viewpoint can fit into many different religions.

I do not think that someone who has faith is a Jesus Freak, though I see the need for some to use the slur to make themselves feel better.

I never even heard the term before actually used in context -- I had a vague impression of it.... I think the person that used the term was attempting to explain, to me, why I find some of the things said on this board startling.

I think growing up in a secular atmosphere vs. religious atmosphere will create some pretty strong impressions upon people. I often say I'm a heathen -- I really shouldn't. When I come into threads and say my take on things (for instance Charity saying women that have had three partners are promiscuous -- or mentioning rape victims by "nuts and sluts") I'm shocked that others seem to think I'm the one out of whack. Then, I have to remember I'm not a "heathen" -- I'm just a woman that did not grow up with any sort of religious indoctrination.

I was being silly this morning and didn't want to offend anyone with my post. I don't care what people have faith in. I do care when I'm told that I'm somehow disgusting or sinful. :)
