Instead of a name they should just say "For a person who is dead"

This would be much more efficient. You would get a 1 to 1 Ratio of every temple session to person that is allowed to spirit paradise. Right now many of the same people get their work done for over and over and over again. People get the names messed up, dates wrong, etc and the work does not help anybody else out on the other side. Also think of the many people that have to hang out in spirit prison because nobody knows their name.

I would hate to be the records clerk on the other side. "Sorry Alphonse Diedrick, they didn't get your name quite right so you have to hang out here in spirit prison until they do".

Sorry to hear of your loss Boaz.

The better question is, why not do a single ordinance to cover all, living and dead, and get it done?

When you have the answer to that, you have the answer to why proxy ordinances for the dead exist in LDS culture in the first place.

You'd have to be able to give the church bad PR over it to get the church to make some kind of deal.

I remember wondering why the church uses names at all.

I mean if members just did the baptism, those record keepers on the other side could figure out which spirit was next in line. As it is, those recent spirits who have just passed on get "baptized" first, while those spirits who have been waiting in spirit prison for thousands of years are still waiting... and of course there are no records at all for most of the human population.. what about them?

Then I would wonder why this "work" is done at all since it will take millions and millions of years to baptize all the 60 billion humans who have lived. Why bother with humans doing all this research and spending the time, money, and energy finding names when, once Christ returns and the millennium begins the books will all be open?

And then, I just thought of the silliness that a spirit in heaven is getting work done, "covenanting" to things that can't even be done or are totally meaningless (what spirit can give all her time and talents to the building up of the church)? :-)

Finally, I had to wonder about a plan where one of the requirements to exaltation is that a human body be dunked under water with a few select sentences spoken.

Dancer, I guess you have found that logic has no room in Mormon theology.

Hey why not have Christ come down a do one session inthe SLC temple in the name of all humanity?

Oh but then the LDS temples would get little use...

See, um, that's essentially what lots of Christian religions believe he did, like something called the atonement covered everyone from a salvific point of view.

Which is why many of them find something like this to be an affront to their core beliefs, and to Christianity itself.

Boaz,

I'm thinking there will come a time in the near future when a class action suit will be filed by the living that will ultimately put a stop to this nonsense.

It is a slap in the face to the survivors and afront to the legacy of so many that have died in their respective faiths to posthumusly have their names on the rolls of the Mormon church cult.

My heart goes out to you and your siblings. Your story hits very close to home. Seems the Mormon church was one of the last to even acknowledge that this sort of abuse even existed or even required scrutiny.

This is concerning my sister. She recently died after a life of depression brought on by years of sexual abuse.

The Mormon church allowed her to be abused by our father and now she will be abused again in the name of keeping tithes rolling in.

LDS Inc has no shame.

I am so sorry about your sister. But may I ask just HOW the LDS Church allowed her to be abused by your father?

Jason,

The Mormon church did not have a plan or standard to deal with child molesters and other wretched abuse until just several years ago. They are now required by law to report these abominations to local law enforcement. Because of this, they stepped up and instituted policies to ban convicted child molesters/sexual offenders and abusers to ever receive callings in the youth organizations (among other things).

This was done because the Mormon God kept inspiring His leaders to occasionally call these dirtbags to such positions.

This is not the first time the law of the land has constrained the Mormon God to refrain from butting into such eclesiastical matters.

I really do wish that the LDS Church would be more sensitive to issues like this. I really can't understand how and why they are so unwilling to compromise or to honor the requests of individual people.

Yes I am aware. Still that does not make the Church responsible for he abuse. I think society as a whole is only over the past maybe 15-20 years become aware of the extend of sexual abuse and really started dealing with it better

Actually this is not true and it varies from state to state.

Because of this, they stepped up and instituted policies to ban convicted child molesters/sexual offenders and abusers to ever receive callings in the youth organizations (among other things).

I do not think it was because of any laws per say. I think it was because they were trying to deal with it better. Also, a few law suits against the Church for abuse cases may have spurred the Churhc more.
This was done because the Mormon God kept inspiring His leaders to occasionally call these dirtbags to such positions.

Well there you have it. The Mormon Church and their God are responsible for all sort of stuff I guess. So you realize how irrational this sounds. You were doing okay until you let your rage prompt such nonesense.
