First, let me make sure I understand what you are saying...

Nibley is looking at a paper that Joseph Smith wrote where he copied the characters from the papyrus. He claims that the same symbol has 3 different meanings.

You, however, are saying that there are 2 separate characters.

So, are you saying that Joseph Smith got it wrong in the copying of the characters from the papyrus? Did Joseph Smith assume those characters were the same, but recent egyptologists have now found that they are different?

If it was Nibley that made the mistake, how do you know the characters are different? They look very similar to me.

Hey Scottie,

The Egyptian Alphabet and Grammar definitely treats these as two separate symbols. This is even more evident when you look at the other places in the Grammar material that these two characters appear. They are also separate characters in Egyptian, if I'm recalling correctly. They were originally the first and second symbols on the Hor Book of Breathings, but the papyrus flake on which they appeared has since fallen off and been lost.

So why Nibley pretends there is only one character here, I can only hypothesize. My tongue-in-cheek hypothesis is that he was on drugs. As for the real reason, well, I'll leave you to draw your own conclusions.
