Ghost car--tales of Fast and Testimony Meeting

Post by _asbestosman »

Today in Fast and Testimony meeting, a middle-aged woman bore her testimony about God protecting her daughter. Apparently her daughter was driving in an unfamiliar place and came to a T intersection. She decided to turn left an then noticed a car behind her. Next thing she knew, the car was in front of her and was slamming on its brakes. The daughter and mother figure that the only explanation is that the cars passed right through each other (for what it's worth, I don't buy that explanation).

This woman then bore her testimony about how she knows God protects her children because she wouldn't be able to handle it if they died. Sorry, but I don't buy that either. Why woud she be less able to handle death than millions of others who suffer untimely deaths, especially when children lose their mothers to death? Why would God protect her child but not someone else's? What would she do if she does lose a child--lose her testimony? I find this kind of testimony very problematic and even hurtful although unintentionally so.

But I woinder how many people had misty eyes as the spirit testified the truthfulness of what she spoke?

Several years ago while still a TBM, I watched a young woman flip her truck end over end on the freeway. 911 on my phone I get to what is left of the vehicle. There she is, dazed and confused, asking for the asprin in her purse (about 50 yards behind all over the road). Shaken and amazed, I arrive at my client's home a little late. I relate the story of providence to the couple. It didn't go over so well. They lost their daughter just 5 months before in an auto accident.

The conclusion? Luck, providence, fortune... ghost cars. Whatever.

Fast and testimony meetings can be fun when people decide to cast their pearls before swine from the pulpit. I imagine the bishopric wakes up when someone starts talking crazy talk during F&T. Gospel doctrine class is another fun one. After the tsunami hit a few years ago, my Gospel Doctrine teacher said it was because of all the wickedness in Southeast Asia. And of course proof of this was it happened on a Sunday, when all the faithful would be in church far away from the beaches.

If people can believe that God sent AIDS to punish gay men, then they can believe God sent a wall of water to punish whoever it lands on.

Twice.

Yeah, I guess so. Still, quite strange.

Interesting how the tornado that touched down in SLC a few years ago wasn't a warning to the Saints to clean up their act. It was just scary.

I don't recall that, but, yeah, that is a good point. In fact, one could reasonable argue that tornadoes are so rare in Utah that its occurrence must be some judgment from God.

When in fact, tornadoes happen, even in Utah. And tsunamies occur, particularly where there's water. And people get sick.

Good to talk with you again, Harmony.
