My guess is that Tal's "Open Letter to Monson" posted on postmormon.org was the catalyst for this latest round.

First thread.

A follow-up thread on the same subject.

Earlier discussion on this board about the letter.

To read James's side of the events in question, see Nastigrams R Us.

He makes the funnily unfunny observation that when one emails a single BYU professor-apologist, one is effectively emailing all of them. James's emails were immediately forwarded to several other BYU staffers, who didn't find it at all odd to respond via email to an email that was not sent to them personally.

Wow! Thanks for posting this, CK. It was very enlightening. For example, check out this:

Mr. White:

Thank you for withdrawing from the exchange; I was worried that this was
going to cost me a lot of time. Backed into a corner, eh? Beating an
ungraceful retreat?

I'm sorry you broke your arrogance meter. Was it a gift from your
mother?
(emphasis added)

There is another thing which readers should notice---namely, the "SKINNY-L@LISTS.TELEPORT.COM". What, I'm curious, is this? Is this a list-serve which is used by the SCMC, or by apologists? White sure seemed to think so:

James White wrote:I was not aware of the SHIELDS page, nor a little inter-BYU list called "skinny-l," so I wondered how Midgley got hold of the Hamblin correspondence.

There are cloak-and-dagger operations all throughout Mormonism, it seems.

I think Dr. Midgley's comments are much more sneering in tone than Dr. Peterson's (perhaps because they're subtler, less heavy-footed), but it is an interesting exchange.

I know there is some sort of list-serve (if that's what you call it) that many of the "high profile" apologists at MAD belong to. I have heard that there is a lot of rumor-mongering on that particular list. Some infighting, too. I recall that one male apologist got the boot from the list, and blamed some of the females on the list for starting rumors about him and his behavior. For the life of me I can't remember who this was.
We hate to seem like we don’t trust every nut with a story, but there’s evidence we can point to, and dance while shouting taunting phrases.

How come we don't have one of these lists? Or do we -- and I was never invited?

Oh, you say this message board is it? I guess that works.

that's not what most of us signed on for. We paid tithing, attended seminary, served missions, etc, under the guise that Jesus Christ built this church from the ground up. This is all well and good, if the church is offering a "buy out", with the option to reconsider ones level of church participation.

Wouldn't it be fun if the Maxwell Institute would send Inquisitor Midgley to start interrogating of Tal's friends, neighbors, family and co-workers in British Columbia? This is assuming the Mounties would not nab him at the airport as an international crank. Perhaps it would be best for him to travel with a goatee, sunglasses, black raincoat, fedora and in the company of a tall woman named Natasha.

Let's start our own list, Dude. We can even have a secret handshake, too. You can invent it, if you want to, or just repurpose one of the ones we already know.
Mormonism ceased being a compelling topic for me when I finally came to terms with its transformation from a personality cult into a combination of a real estate company, a SuperPac, and Westboro Baptist Church. - Kishkumen

Would it be lame to mention the word 'cult' right now?

Wasn't Kevin Graham on this list for a while?
