According to this, Brodie touches on it on pages 198-202. I don't have the book in front of me to verify this, however.

I'll have to check Brodie's footnotes.

Where did the claim originate?

NMKMH, 196-197:
"Lining the shelves of the bank vault, they said, were many boxes marked $1,000. Actually these boxes were filled with 'sand, lead, old iron, stone, and combustibles,' but each had a top layer of bright fifty-cent silver coins. Anyone suspicious of the bank's stability was allowed to lift and count the boxes. 'The effect of those boxes was like magic;' said C. G. Webb. 'They created general confidence in the solidity of the bank and that beautiful paper money went like hot cakes. For about a month it was the best money in the country.'"*

In RSR, Bushman had a section on the kirtland bank, but didn't even bring this up. It was all a scam regardless of whether this little story actually happened.
WK: "Joseph Smith asserted that the Book of Mormon peoples were the original inhabitants of the americas"
Will Schryver: "No, he didn’t." 3/19/08
Still waiting for Will to back this up...

I'll listen to just about any criticism of the church and Joseph, but your sources are, at best, dubious and outright slander at worst. Come up with some other source of material to justify your hatred of the church. These sources have been around for years. This is not some groundbreaking new thing here.

Calm down there, coach!!

This is why I brought it up. To find out if the sources amount to anything credible.

On what pages does Bushman cover this particular bank issue?
