Gaz,
I'll give this a try.
But Jersey, what does a person believe about Christ? I know some ev's who think that no one actually ever saw Christ because your not supposed to ever be able to see God. They say he blurred their vison so they never actually saw him, kind of a corner of your eye view. I'm serious, I've had people say this to me.
In the above example you are talking about something that has little to do with the life and teachings of Christ. It is irrelevant whether or not someone thinks no one ever actually "saw" Christ. What has that got to do with the nature of Christ, his life, teachings, crucifixion, resurrection, ascension or His relationship to the Father? You might as well have said that you know some EV's who think he never wore shoes. You asked about what base EV's operate from. Whether or not someone thinks that no one ever saw Christ or that (in my example) he never wore shoes doesn't constitute a base from which to "operate" from.
A true belief in Christ requires baptism. Do the various sects believe a person should be baptised?
No, it doesn't Gaz. If you want to have the "born of water" discussions, I'm all yours.
They all operate from the Bible, but they interpret it differently, and the opinions garnered are over very signifigant things. Baptism beign way up there on the list.
Whether or not some people think that no one ever saw Christ and Baptism, are in no way "significant" things. Those are secondary issues (beliefs and practices) that do not effect the core doctrines about Christ. You asked what EV's believe
about Christ. When you ask me to articulate what EV's believe
about Christ], I think of his birth, life, teachings, death, resurrection, his relationship to the Father and to us. Those are the core issues of EV belief [b]about Christ. Baptism isn't a belief about Christ, it is an ordinance that means something diferent to various groups.
Are you seriously saying that baptism is required to the point that if a believing person were killed on their way to their own baptism ceremony they wouldn't be saved? Do you believe that Christ/God operates through game playing?
The true foundation of religion is revelation. God has to be speaking, and traditionally this is done through his prophets (Amos 3:7). That is the true foundation, God speaking and leadign his people in covenants and through his priesthood that order is maintained and true doctrine taught.
The true foundation of Christianity is Christ. I can think of nothing that wasn't already presented by Christ in the Bible that needed to be given to man by revelation.
You have been taught that revelation is the foundation of your religion because it began with revelations on the part of Joseph Smith and this has been transmitted to LDS generationally. On the boards we see apologists attempt to undermine the revelations of Joseph Smith when confronted by challenging questions or comments, by saying that he was speaking as a man. If there is no valid way to determine upon hearing a revelation whether or not it is God speaking or the prophet speaking as a man, then I have to say that the only way for mankind to determine what God is telling them is to go directly to the Bible, Indwelling of the Holy Spirit (that teaches all things) and prayer as the conduit. These are prescribed in the Bible, Gaz.
Continuing revelation is not.
According to the New Testament, Jesus delivered the Gospel and that was it. There is nothing in his words that indicate the need for "continuing" revelation except that personal revelation that comes to the individual from the Holy Spirit through prayer.
