He didn't give his life. He died because of his pride.

Jim Jones did not drink the cool-aid he was shoot through the heart. Koresh was just nuts. Besides you don't shame a con-man they have none.

Jones was shot in the head, and it is uncertain whether it was self-inflicted. But Jones certainly did not expect to make it out of there alive, did he? Besides, Joseph tried to defend himself with a gun - he didn't die willingly. He tried to protect his life by shooting at his attackers. Of course, that is understandable, but it certainly isn't just laying down like a lamb, is it?

The problem with your dismissive "David Koresh was just nuts" is that, to outsiders, there are many similarities between Smith and Koresh, and they could retort that Joseph Smith was just nuts, as well.

You are oversimplifying human nature by asserting "you can't shame con-men". There may be some that are complete sociopaths, but most are not, and can, indeed, be shamed. In particular, they can be shamed, embarrassed, and humiliated by public censor - which is what Joseph was facing - the loss of respect of his friends and family.
We hate to seem like we don’t trust every nut with a story, but there’s evidence we can point to, and dance while shouting taunting phrases.

The memory is faded now...but it was not self inflicted...I was in the 498th Medivac unit who went down to retrive the bodies. I only wish Joseph Smith had 10 guns and better aim. When a solider dies in combat, even though he was fighting back does not mean he did not give his life for his country. Again if it were all about the sex he would have continued running.

That must be a terrible memory. Everything I've read says it was a gunshot to the head, and it was not possible to determine whether or not it was self inflicted.

Aside from that, who says it was all about the sex? I think sex was a part of it, but only a part. It was also about prestige and power. That is what he would have lost had he continued running. Besides, even con-men can genuinely love their family and friends, and not want to lose and/or disappoint them.

Michael Trevasser is an absolute, no-holds-barred, nut-job freak.

I'm watching a documentary available on the Strong City website right now.

It is utterly heartbreaking to hear these women testify that their deepest spiritual needs have been met through having sex with Michael.

There is enough overlap with Joseph Smith's Restoration that it's almost as if MT is cribbing from Smith.

I'm working on a post.

But, frankly, I'm too disgusted to put any more effort into it tonight.

Highlight (=lowpoint): MT straightfacedly proclaims that he really just didn't want to have sex with all those women. But, GOD commanded it, and he knew he couldn't reject God's will.

He was forced into these multiple sexual relationships (that resulted in spiritual "marriage") by God.

Going to watch something stupid and funny now, 'cause this is embittering.

This is seriously incredible!!

How can TBM's see this and still believe Joseph Smith was a true prophet??

I started watching the documentary and am a little more than half-way through. It's completely nauseating for me. It reminds me oddly of Testimony Meetings in the Mormon church. The way MT speaks is utterly creepy. His falsely reverent, sanctimonious tone sends chills down my spine.

He makes me sick and I imagine he has more in common with Joseph Smith than we can imagine.

Those poor misguided women. I feel sorry for them.

I wonder if he's spawned any children from these women?

Sickening...

The cult leader promises blessings if they become his "intimate bride," the girls and women testify they know they were called of God to be with Michael, prophesies are coming to pass in this group, the women had visions of Michael, they are fulfilling the revelations concerning the last days, Michael didn't want to have sex with these girls and women but God commanded him and departed from him when he hesitated, even the LDS picture of Christ, etc. etc.

Sounds way too familiar.

:-(

I wonder if Michael has some LDS background or history? Hmmm...

That was my first thought.
