What if...

Imagine this as an anti-Mormon book, and FARMS is doing a review of it. What is the first thing they would say?

My guess: you would have several reviews on the fact that neither the DSM-IV nor the American Medical Association recognize something called "Shaken Faith Syndrome" as an actual medical or psychological condition.

I could just see them at the Cougareat over a Navajo taco patting each other on the back over how they really zinged the authors on that one. Sort of like the hullabaloo about the non-issue of Grant Palmer's "insider" status.

But I am happy for Mike Ash. He is one of my favorite FAIRites to hang with, and seems to be an all-round good guy. He's been in apologetics for many years, and it is high time he put a book out. Mike, if you are listening... Congrats man!

Thanks, Mike. The feeling is mutual.

The title, of course, is a play on the Shaken Baby Syndrome. There are things that can kill/damage an LDS testimony & hence I felt the title was not only catchy but had some meaning.

Nice photoshopping Infymus.

Please remember that the people on the cover are real people with real feelings (& they are people I know personally and closely).

The cover may be "dorky" (although I kind of like it & think Sandy Winward [a professional graphic artist] did a great job). The idea of a book cover is to grab attention-- pictures (especially of people) tend to do that. As a small fry in the big LDS book market, I wanted the book to stand out (& try to portray an understanding of the book's content) so someone would grab it off the shelf, maybe read the back cover, & maybe thumb through it, & hopefully by it.

It's aimed at the average Mormon. I try to deal with the feelings & reasons some people leave, how they handle cog dis & then get into concise responses to the most common arguments (with references to more detailed responses). I don't try to persuade anyone that the Church is true, but I do try to point out that there is evidence for & against & I believe it's true and here is why I think the most popular arguments are not strong enough to persuade me to leave.

In posting this to MD I want to state up front that I don't have time to debate any issues (those who know me know that I'm a very infrequent visitor to message boards). I simply wanted to let MD members aware of some of the details.

And thanks for the encouragement TruthDancer. :)

Yes, the title and cover art are equally sensationalist. I would also suggest that they are in poor taste, but each person has his or her own sense of these things. I can't help but think that even at their most sensationalist, the Signature Book covers are more tastefully done, but again...
