If I recall correctly, even other apologists admit that Midgley is a loose cannon with a bad temper. But I think that, secretly, many of them like that about him - just like internet apologists tend to like Pahoran.
We hate to seem like we don’t trust every nut with a story, but there’s evidence we can point to, and dance while shouting taunting phrases.

Pahoran wouldn't be allowed to do what he does if there wasn't some appreciation for it. In ZLMB chat, I recall Juliann sharing that she thought (paraphrasing here) Pahoran just told it like it is, and that just irks the critics.
Pahoran is sort of the Ann Coulter of LDS message board apologists. When someone says something like, "Sure he/she goes a little overboard at times, but he/she makes great arguments and I appreciate his/her contributions" you've been given a wealth of information about that person.
Total aside moment. DCP? Ann Coulter fan.

Yeah, I know there's quite a bit of believer appreciation for the Pahorans and Midgleys. Believers must experience a lot of frustration in these debates, and yet still can't stay away from them. It is dismaying that believers really do view Pahoran as being usually right, and just telling it "the way it is", because "the way it is" according to Pahoran is that apostates really are the malicious, sinning liars church leaders have always said they were.
Maybe because it's late, but I can't figure out your DCP comment. You mean DCP is actually a real life fan of the real life Ann Coulter, or just in a figurative sense that he's a fan of the "in your face" Ann Coulters of the LDS apologia world???

Indeed. At least one amateur apologist on the message boards has expressed glee at being mistaken for Midgley.

Here's how I see it. If you started trashing Ann Coulter in front of DCP, he would most defend her out of reflex -- without knowing too much about Coulter and what she's actually said in print. At the very least he would defend Coulter's right to link Nazi Germany with Darwin, although she does it as part of an irresponsible propaganda campaign (same as for Ben Stein). And so, once again, he would embarass himself without even knowing it.

Yes, these guys are a real discredit to their religion when they behave like this, and I have no trouble believing that Roper, Midgley, and "X" went out specifically to harass Sandra Tanner. This kind of junior high behavior really gets these guys' rocks off. If the leaders of the LDS Church got wise on this, they would put a stop to these shenanigans. Apologists who get out of hand in this way would face the scrutiny of their ecclesiastical leaders for their behavior in these matters.
I fail to see how acting like playground bullies enhances the LDS Gospel's truth one iota.

Dr. Peterson did add one interesting detail when this was discussed on FAIR some years ago. He mentioned that Midgley's article on Palmer was run through the legal department. My guess is they looked at how close he was skating to the edge in his investigation. Well, it got the okay from FAIR and undoubtedly the legal department for the National Inquirer would have concurred. However, it still did not seem ethical to me.
