So, Jason, since you've been in the bishopric, let me ask you....Are specific background checks performed before primary workers and youth Sunday School teachers are called? Is there talk to incorporate this?

No and no, at least in my experience. However, I think we should do this and in fact it seems there are easy resources available to do this these days. But I think you have to disclose it. I know in my company we do background checks on potential employees but we let them know about it and put it as a condition of employment.

Do you know if there's a way that I, as a non-member father, can know for certain members of a ward or ward leadership don't have sexual offenses on record? Is there a way I can find out from the church, or am I left to my own devices?

I wonder how widespread child sexual abuse is within the Mormon priesthood? I wonder what steps are being taken to prevent this from happening in the future? Background checks? Anything?

In my experience it is not wide spread. In my experience when there is such and offender they get no where near kids. No teaching, no HT assignments, nothing even after they may have gone through a repentance process. If a member is disciplined for child abuse their record is notated with this forever so leader know and can act accordingly.

Its not the people dumb enough to get caught that worry me. Its the child predator who knows how to cover his tracks. Your approach does not take this into account and has the potential to be problematic.
