The cartoon is humorous, but troubling. If a "mopologist" is someone who cleans up messes, then the term doesn't apply well to real LDS apologists because (as others have pointed out) once the pickle is out of the jar the apologists are powerless. Worse, the efforts of apologists become ridiculous at that point.

Consider Mark Ash's new book about "Shaken Faith Syndrome." The apologist a person who warns women and children not to experiment with the jar -- far better to put it back on the shelf alongside all the other jars of doubt. Rest assured that professionals and scholars have examined the jars, even opened a few, and their accounts can be reviewed at the front of the store if anyone is interested in such things. (The accounts are carefully redacted, of course.) There's no need for anybody else to pick up the jars, which contain nothing of use or value to the good customers of Old Joe's country store. In a better world these jars would be locked in storage, but thanks to the internet they are now stocked in plain view.

Here is the artist: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dan_Piraro

"Dan Charles Piraro (born 1958) is a surrealist painter, illustrator, and cartoonist best-known for his award-winning syndicated panel cartoon Bizarro. Formerly from Dallas, he went to high school at Booker T. Washington in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and dropped out of Washington University in St. Louis. He currently resides in Brooklyn, New York City with his wife, Ashley. Piraro, a vegan, often presents animal rights issues in a humorous way in his comic strips."

I hope it is clear to everyone that the author is talking about a mop-ologist. This really has nothing to do with Mormonism outside of our creative minds.

Any other interpretations?

Someone on MADB suggested that the broken jar represented a shattered testimony. The mopologist was there to sweep up the pieces.

Chris

I cannot agree with that interpretation. Mopologists *never* "mop up" shattered testimonies. If the cartoon were accurate, the "Mopologist" would be insulting the kid and his mom, telling him that they should have known this would happen, since warnings about the breakability of pickle jars are freely available all throughout the store. Further, the Mopologist has his own pickle jar at home, and he has never broken it, nor have any of his pickle-jar-owning friends ever broken their jars. Really, the kid and the mom are probably just weak, or they are sinners, or someone offended them into breaking the jar.

I think everybody knew that the comic was not drawn with anything LDS in mind. The coincidence is humorous -- outside of that it barely registers above "Family Circus" and not quite at the level of "Ziggy."

It's no secret that my IQ consistantly registers much lower than most people here.

I didn't catch it until John pointed it out.

Sure, but without the Mo-pologist angle, the comic is just really lame.

I think it's a comment about banning Dill Pickles from MAD. Another protest against the resident gestapo.
