I would like to have my dad jailed for when I was 13, got caught steeling hoodies, and he told me he was disappointed in me (he also made me go to the door of every house I took one from, return it, apologize, and offer to work off the cost to have it re-attached). Now that was emotionally traumatizing.
Where's the petition against parents telling their children that they're disappointed in them? In fact, where’s the petition against being put in time-out? Where’s the petition against rewarding kids for getting good grades (after all, if you get a reward for good grades, not getting the reward when you have bad grades can be psychologically abusive)? Where’s the petition against my brother for jokingly telling my nephew that there was a boogie monster in his nose that would get his finger if he kept picking it? Where’s the petition against Halloween? Where’s the petition against telling ghost stories on campouts? Where’s the petition against scary movies? Where’s the petition against parent’s telling their kids that if they’re naughty Santa won’t come?
I need to start exercising my signing hand. We need to use this as a jumping off point. There is momentum in the current petition that needs to be harnessed. We need to unite and mobilize people!

We must respect the other fellow's religion, but only in the sense and to the extent that we respect his theory that his wife is beautiful and his children smart.

Only if you consider emotional abuse a religious freedom. Genital mutilation might also be a religious freedom. We should still "censor" it.
At last we're getting somewhere.
So you have admitted that the legislation will be censorning religious freedoms.

I have no problem censoring certain religious actions. I'd bet that most of you don't either, really. It depends on our cultural norms and what we view as harmful. Should people be allowed to keep a child locked up and exorcise the demon out of that child -- keep water and food away from them? Perhaps the child is epileptic. Should people be allowed to sacrifice other people to appease their God? What about a man's religion that says it's appropriate to beat a woman if she's out of her Burka? Is that acceptable or should we limit that activity in our culture?
I'm uncomfortable with the legislation because it is looking at a belief system and not a religious action. Beliefs should be challenged, they really can't be legislated out of existence, imho. Yet, I'm not going to state that it can't be emotionally abusive to transmit certain beliefs to a child. It certainly can be.
I think it can be emotionally abusive to tell children they're going to hell -- along with telling them they're worthless, stupid, etc.. Yet, it would be on a case by case basis, really, and that isn't something we can know about each individual family that has a belief in heaven and hell. Teaching the belief is a bit different than telling children they're going there, also. I think it would depend more upon how they approach the beliefs and transmit them to their children.

I can't ban disappointment but in Canada a young girl got her father grounding her overturned in court.

Ya, nowhere.

I did? Did you just admit that mutilating the genitals of an infant is a religious freedom?

Huhzah! The revolution has begun. Quick, someone get me a petition against parents reading the stories of Die Gebrüder Grimm to their children. Let’s not stop the momentum. My digital signing hand is rip-roaring and ready to go!

When I was a kid, our house was at the end of a road that lead through a bit of a long, wooded area. When we were really young, we'd sometimes go wandering off too far down that way on our own.
...so my Dad told us about the 'Tree-Kid-Killer' who wandered around in the woods, and would eat little kids who weren't with any grown-ups.
Scared me alright. He even showed us some ripped-up kids clothes (which we didn't realise were some of our own - just really old and dirty). He said they'd been found a few nights ago in the woods - the 'Tree-Kid-Killer' had struck again!
...where can I sign up to sue my Dads lying a***?
That said, any extreme forms of hell belief being used to 'unreasonable ends' should be looked into as a form of child abuse in my opinion. My 'line' may be different to others though - and I'm not convinced the most important facet of any such particular case would be that the belief of 'hell' was involved...

Are you including circumcism in your crusade?
What crusade? Have you had a chance to read about Russell's teapot? I hope so.
If you are asking me whether or not I think parents have the right to saw the tips of little infant boys penis' off, I think you already know the answer.
