Is this statement from the Church (yesterday) true?

Post by _mms »

The Church put out a press release yesterday entitled: "Who Are the Mormons"

Under the subsection "Service", and in talking about people with different beliefs/faiths, the "Church" states:

President Monson recently made a plea to the members of the Church for more religious understanding and tolerance: “I would encourage members of the Church wherever they may be to show kindness and respect for all people everywhere. The world in which we live is filled with diversity. We can and should demonstrate respect toward those whose beliefs differ from ours.” Thus, Latter-day Saints accept all sincere believers as equals in the pursuit of faith and in the great work of serving humanity.
[Bolding mine]

BC says that these releases are "doctrine" because they are put out by the "Church". Does this "doctrine" contradict in any prior "doctrine" or teachings of the Church regarding how LDS fair among all believers?

Also, if there are sincere ex-mos on this board and elsewhere who sincerely believe that the Church is not true and is a "fraud", are they considered "equals" in the "pursuit of faith" in the Church's view?

Just wondering what the "diversity" of thought may be on this.

The release is here:

You have to read the nuisance though. All "sincere" believers are equals in the "pursuit of faith" and in "serving humanity".

We all know that ex-mos and other members of the Church of the Devil are not sincere. They secretly know Mormonism is true in their heart of hearts.

Also the pursuit of something is not the same as having something and we know that Mormons alone have the true faith. Monson just handed the world a participation ribbon because only the Mormons have the blue ribbon.

That's a complete 180 from the things early church presidents use to do like kneel in prayer for the death and destruction of those opposed to the church.

If true, the statement is excellent. I applaud it totally.

Sometimes I feel though, that the church just can't win with some people, damned if they do, damned if they don't, where every act, no matter how sincere, is met with cynicism....

I know. I was actually thinking that as I drove past a meetinghouse the other day.

I posted once about how the church boasted importing stone from Africa and how ridiculous it is to spend that much money on something so frivilous. Yet, people complain all the time about how dull and uninspired the meetinghouses are.

And why is that? I think it is because of a long history of twisting the truth or outright lying by the institution, is going to make the skeptic or non-believer understandably take anything said with a grain of salt. Though there are good people in the church, this is a good example or result of the church itself being rotten to the core and why it cannot be fixed from the inside.

If for example the Dali Lama makes a statement about something is it automatically mistrusted? No, because of his history.

I think what we all tend to forget is that you can be an active member and still totally believe that the church is what it says it is, that Joseph Smith was what he said he was. I have no doubt that DCP for instance has a strong 'testimony' of the church. In that light, I think the GA's really do want to move the church forward and correct any cultural errors that they see occuring in their members..even if those cultural errors were/are founded on 'doctrine' or past words of leaders...

Just my opinion though Christopher...

Just because we feel that we were in a church that wasn't what we thought it was, doesn't mean that they feel the same way...

If only all faiths exhibited this kind of respect for other faiths. This was a good message. Now, if Mr. Monson could include ALL of humanity in his message of love we might be closer to what the creators of Christ had in mind.

The Church has always taught that we seek out the faithful wherever they can be found, and we ask them to keep the truths they have, and discard the traditions of their fathers that are false.

that's what Christ taught, and that is what continues to be taught.

I do. Why would the Church officially publish something that it did not consider doctrinally consistent?

Does this "doctrine" contradict in any prior "doctrine" or teachings of the Church regarding how LDS fair among all believers?

Of course not. Is there anything you think does contradict?

Also, if there are sincere ex-mos on this board and elsewhere who sincerely believe that the Church is not true and is a "fraud", are they considered "equals" in the "pursuit of faith" in the Church's view?

Sure. Just so long as you don't equate tolerance with acceptance of beliefs. That would be narrow-minded in the extreme.

Just wondering what the "diversity" of thought may be on this.
