Too true. And, while dusting off "THE Word OF Wisdom," how about ditto, "the perils of wealth-building/seeking-after riches?" WOW, just imagine a congregation of physically-fit, spiritually tuned to resist materialism... 'Twould hardly be recognized as LDS ;-)
I hear warnings about materialism all the time. You can't get more then a few chapters (after Nephi) in the Book of Mormon without getting a warning about it. I don't think it's a lack of teaching, it's a matter of application.
I do wish more was said about taking care of the body God has given you. However, the Word of Wisdom and the like are so personally applicable and customizable it's hard to teach it to a group. One of my most depressing memories is a man with diabetes brought on by obesity standing at the pulpit telling us how wonderful the Word of Wisdom is. I was sitting next to my brother and afterwards I found out he had the same reaction: not sure whether to laugh or to cry. Still, focus should be on me. A few more pounds to lose to perfect six-pack.
