Someone help me out here...

Post by _Mary »

John " was making some great comments over at the mad board on Aarons video thread and he suddenly gets banned from the thread
with LoaP who admiringly objected getting suspended.

What on earth is going on over there?

Crazy...

No doubt some form of mass insanity as you have noted. As to why? I think they are prepping for the FAIR conference.

The MAD board is run strictly on emotion. Very little logic goes into the decision making process over there.

If a mod is having a bad day, you have every chance of getting banned for an innocent post. Right, Sethbag.

At least in this instance the MADerators saw fit to announce that they had banned certain posters from a paticular thread. This is a courtesy not often extended.

But anyway, I found the whole exchange as ridiculous as it was entertaining, especially the suspension of LifeOnaPlate, so I reproduce here the greatest hits for your enjoyment:

Orpheus wrote:You [John W] need to stop turning every thread into saying what you believe and don't believe. If you want to bear your testimony then use the Social Hall. Everybody else stop taking the bait. Posters who use threads to talk about themselves regardless of what the topic is are going to be banned from the thread.

John W responded:

John W wrote:I wasn't trying to bait anyone, just defending myself when I was attacked. I apologize for derailing the thread.

To which a MADerator responded in a red font edit to John's apology:

MADerator wrote:And this is just more derailing. You are 'attacked' because you won't stop talking about yourself no matter what the topic is. You are banned from the thread and no more warnings. ~ Mod

LoaP took exception to this ruling and was also banned from the thread. Here's the post that did it, followed by a MADerator's red font edit, followed again by LoaP's rejoinder (also done as an edit to the original post, since he couldn't make any new posts within the thread), followed yet again by more red:

LifeOnaPlate wrote:Maybe I'll get banned too. John W was responding to comments about him, and I don't think banning him from the thread is the right decision. What about other people who talked to John W, such as myself and JWhitlock? Ought we not also be banned then, in fairness?

OK. If Whitlock wants to be banned too he will have to speak up. ~ Mods

As I have been banned from the thread, I will edit this comment instead.

I asked a question about fairness, I didn't ask to be banned from the thread.. I literally see nothing wrong with John W (or anyone else) talking about whether they believe in scriptures or not. It's a discussion board. The discussion between John W myself and Jwhit is hardly different than any member of the board saying we do believe in scripture, we don't believe in Joseph Smith, etc., etc. The mods own the board and are welcome to do what they wish. As a member of the board I feel obligated, however, to register a complaint when I believe the mods have made a bad decision. In this case, I certainly do and have.

Now you are suspended. Read the board guidelines about talking back to mods before you post again.

Then these off-topic, derailing gems by jwhitlock:

jwhitlock wrote:LoaP, you're starting to think like Mike Reed.

You are right. And so is Scottie. It is never wise to complain publicly on the board about moderating. That said, I was sooooo proud of Lifeonaplate for speaking up in defense of John!! It was suicide...but it was bold. The mod was singling John out--probably because he/she was having a bad day (as Scottie said) or they were just annoyed with the whole thread and the way it was degenerating with the personal attacks and so they went after John as he was the easiest and safest target. Life, you were right--it was an unfair, cowardly action by that mod to target the "safest" poster to discipline and you got burned for pointing it out--they won't tolerate any kind of correction on the open board though.

The moderation seems to be a bit arbitrary lately--I suspect it is because of the moderators' different personalities. I reported temple content (exact quote from the film) to a moderator and it was never removed. I suppose it could have been overlooked, but I suspect it might have been because the person who posted it was an LDS regular and it was meant as a joke. I think the moderator who took my report must have thought it was funny and allowed it to stand. I suspect that if another moderator had seen it, they might have removed it and admonished the poster. I do think that the rules are enforced at differing levels and for different posters depending on who is making the calls.

You suckers! The whole exchange is ridiculous because LOAP is himself a moderator. Jwhitlock makes for a nice shill in the performace. ;)

Everyone who posts over there needs to mark their calendars. Juliann must be PMS'ing at the moment, and the other Mods have synched with her cycle.

I honestly don't understand why Runtu puts up with their unwarranted crap.

Oh, and LifeOnAPlate......welcome to the dark side. ;)

No, he isn't. He's a Spam Buster. They have very limited administrative power. All they can do is delete spam.

talking back to mods

This sounds so ridiculous. "Talking back"? Implying that posters are mere children, sassing their parents. This seems to be the work of Juliann.

I skimmed through the thread (it's fairly tedious). Runtu was really just responding to what was directed to him. It cracked me up to see that his apology drew a rebuke as a derailment.

Good times.
