Actually, it's called the Dialogue and Discussion forum. It isn't necessarily intended for debate, doubting, or calling the LDS church into question.

Also, if you read MDB's message, it was not designed to debate, question, or doubt doctrine. It was designed to discuss topics in Mormonism.

BOTH boards are a product of the members.

Fair enough, but somehow I can easily imagine MADB getting itself inline with Elder Ballard's admonition with some different moderation while I couldn't fathom it happening here.

What I heard Elder Ballard say, is that we should have our discussions - whether we agree or disagree - without rancor. I think this was almost the next sentence following the opening quote.

To remove the rancor from Shadesville and MAD would be beneficial in my opinion.

The passage here is quite clearly expressing the idea that LDS ought not get into discussions that question, doubt, or debate "gospel principles." Presumably he is saying this because questioning, doubting, or debating teachings of the LDS Church opens one up the the possibility of finding reasons to reject them. He allows for discussion that does not involve those things, such as testimony bearing, sharing teachings, preaching, answering friendly questions, and so forth. Just don't catch yourself in a conversation where gospel principles are under dispute.

This is just what I experienced as LDS. Doubt was viewed as a sign of weakness and maybe even sinfulness. Debate was wrong because to debate is to concede that there is a reasonable opposing view to consider. In the eyes of The One True Church, there isn't. There's God's side, and Satan's side.

If this surprises you in any way, you've been hanging around internet Mormons too long.
