Nope, the kid showed up at the MTC wanting to be a Missionary. Act like it or get out.

I don't think it's a good enough reason to kick him out, but even if it were there was no need for the 'eternal threat' (my description) that BKP threw in at the end -- that seemed like a serious overreaction.

I think it's a great reason to kick him out. People like him end up being projects once they reach the Mission field and some poor sap is stuck with him. Sometimes they come around sometimes not. I was stuck with a guy on my Mission who hated the Mission, hated his family, hated the leaders, hated every companion he'd ever had, hated the Gospel, hated doing missionary work, and hated everything else. He was drain. He was a leech. He was a smart-aleck. We discussed this and I eventually suggested going home but he wouldn't. I have no idea why.

The Mission Field is not a place to coddle people. It's hard enough even when you don't have slackers who ended up on Missions simply because they had nothing better to do dragging everyone else down.

I think it's a bit of a stretch to compare between a rude, arrogant a-hole of a teenager vs being a robot.

But, yes, I think threatening to use his testimony against him at the pearly gates was a bit much.

But the kid BKP spoke of turned out fine.

Sometimes they come around sometimes not. I think much of this could be resolved if the Church would treat a mission for young men as truly voluntary (rather than a priesthood responsibility that becomes a stigma if not met) -- that is, only have mishies who really want to be there, rather than the pressure which often makes kids go who really shouldn't, in my opinion.

The Mission Field is not a place to coddle people. It's hard enough even when you don't have slackers who ended up on Missions simply because they had nothing better to do dragging everyone else down.

Agreed, ergo, my suggestion that the mission be entirely voluntary with no pressure or stigma on young men.

Such are the limitations of the written word. I meant... being a BKP type missionary would mean being a robot without a personality and a brain.

Personally, I think the story is bogus. I can't see anyone pulling BKP aside and suggesting he speak with any individual missionary. To do so would be to admit defeat, that they couldn't solve a little problem like a smart alecky missionary. BKP doesn't deal in little problems like this. He's the Lord's grizzly, not the Lord's teddy bear. No way would the MTC MP do this.

I had a couple of companions like that.
In retrospect they were smart young men who resented being forced into a one size fits all box where life was ruled by an *sshole misson president whose only goal was to make GA. They were programmed from birth to go on a mission and where the home life and family relationships would have been toast had they not completed the mission. They were not lazy.. quite the opposite..

by the way. .I would bet a $100 that BKP story is a pile of BS .. Romney comes back from Mexico extolling the virtues of some elder down there?? Typical Faith-Promoting Rumor B***s***! The only way I would believe it is that the kid was some GA's son.

No guys... This one is a true story. The young missionary was yours truly...

BKP probably did it to every missionary. And each time he probably said this is the only time I've ever done this.
