Local church units have lots of swimming or water skiing parties where men go shirtless. Seems to me that not paying tithing or going to Church is more grounds for excommunication than the calendar.
Indeed it would be hypocritical of the Church to censure this guy and not censure Harry Reid who has done far more damage to the Church's image simply by being a Democrat in high position, not to mention his attacks on the Church sponsored Marriage Ammendment.
There are much bigger fish to fry imho.

Harry's bishop and SP obviously understand his importance in the grand scheme of things (and the hullaballo that would occur were he to be so publically called on the carpet for exercising his eternal right to his opinion). This poor guy's bishop and SP are obviously more concerned about the possibility of skin cancer from all that skin being overexposed.

I doubt that.

Of that I have no doubt. However, I believe principle often Trump's cost benefit analysis and such is the case here.

You're not too far off the mark. Back in 2006, during the gay marriage amendment fiasco, Reid received a rather strong letter from a former SP in Las Vegas (I'm not sure whether it was Reid's former SP or not). Below is a link to a news article about the letter, and here's an excerpt from the article quoting the letter:
Howard wrote that by not supporting the constitutional amendment, "You chose your party's agenda over Nevadans', over your Prophets' wishes, and defied God in the process. ... You have sold out for power and position. Whining about how offended you are that your 'Brethren' are not supportive of you anymore is not becoming of a leader of such high position. Justifying your weak stance in direct opposition to your Church's position is lame. You fear your party more than God."
Howard concluded: "But having sold out your Church, your State and possibly your soul for political power, I will have a hard time supporting you or voting for you in the future, should you attempt to hold on to your seat. Your soul is vacant, and you have lost your moral compass."

"Moving beyond apologist persuasion, LDS polemicists furiously (and often fraudulently) attack any non-traditional view of Mormonism. They don't mince words -- they mince the truth."

From the article:
Davie [the SP] on Friday confirmed sending the letter and the plans for the meeting. He said the calendar was the primary concern.
"I prefer not to say anything else about it," he said. "There is more involved, and he and I will have our meeting."

Some of the missionaries in the calendar, many of whom were recruited by Hardy's friends at church events, have been asked by their church leaders about the project, but none has faced disciplinary action, Hardy said.
"The biggest concern was, whether this was an attack on the church, and when they determined it wasn't, it was no big deal," said model Jonathan Martin, a 25-year-old Utah Valley University student who was contacted by a church elder in May. "When you don something outside of the norm, it doesn't matter what group of people you're in, it's going to unsettle them."
Martin said he was told the inquiry was being made after a letter was sent to his church leader by higher-ups in Salt Lake City.

I cracked up at the single comment (so far) to the AP article:
From Hucklebucker:
That's right ladies, salvation never looked so good or tempting! And here's Rafael, back from the sun drenched beaches of the Carribean, he was on a mission from god, now he's on a mission for love! Have you heard the good news, this steamy hunk of man is single and looking for little miss right to spend an eternity in steaming hot eternal bliss with under the loving eye of our lord, watch out he's a scorcher!

It seems that this calendar has been out forever, did the church just now become aware of it?

It sure will depress Droopy if this man caves in to the pressure. Our economic pie will be one slice smaller, thanks to the church and its socialist interventions.
