Several years ago I posted on MAD about some deeply personal family issues dealing with family medical issues. Hammer, then posting as Serious, wrote some cruel things in response. Due to that incident, among others, I held a long-term, off and on again grudge against him.
A year or so ago, in what I see now as a moment of weakness, I responded to an inquiry from Mr. Scratch about Hammer’s former identity. This was my sole case of being one of Scratch’s informants, and I’m not proud of it. Perhaps it is in penance of this act that I feel obligated to speak against those who would deride Hammer. Perhaps it is because I’ve taken an inordinate interest in his posts over the years, know his in real life identity, and feel that I’ve come to a better understanding of who he is over time. Whatever the case, I’ve had some negative and positive interaction with him through the years, and I feel that acknowledgement of his positive side has been neglected due to his unusual and often inflammatory comments.

Maybe we should remember that like everyone, he’s dealing with his own life issues, and that some of his thought processes may not be totally under his control. I think that he’s a good person that is haunted by his own ‘demons’, and that it is my responsibility to forgive him, for he knows not what he does.

I think you are insinuating some fairly negative things but keeping it vague enough to let imaginations run wild. That can be more cruel than simply being upfront with criticisms of character. Personally, I take this post to mean you are implying he is mentally ill so people should lay off a little.

I remember that time he said [...] Oh boy did you go after him! That was a side of you I'd never seen before, and haven't seen since. Not that I had/have a problem with it.
I don't think we should have to take into account his real life situation(s). We only know how he behaves on the boards, and that's righly what we respond to. It can only get personal if you choose to introduce personal information....
[edit: I just realized I didn't need to introduce the details of what he said to provoke you. It's enough for me to say that your response was completely justified, no matter what his real life situation is. We can't sit by and let slander go unchallenged, no matter who is doing it or why.]

I probably should've simply stated that people should cut him some slack. I think that I mistakenly injected some personal information that I thought would help others understand why I was making the suggestion. In hindsight, I think I was careless in my posting, and I appreciate EA and yourself pointing that out.
Lee's writing style makes him very easy to identify. He'd have to alter it significantly not to be noticed. And knowing Lee and his writing style, that probably would be very hard for him to do.

He'd also have to refrain from posting Chapman's horse article* for a month or two. I don't think he can do it.

We hate to seem like we don’t trust every nut with a story, but there’s evidence we can point to, and dance while shouting taunting phrases.
