Do any of you want to know that the USA does things to people that would make you cringe?

People can believe in what ever fantasy they want, as far as I'm concerned. If it makes them happy, it's their life. But, I expect in return the following:
1. They hold no expectation that I possess the same inclination to engage in similar self-delusion.
2. They keep their self-delusion to themselves and make no attempt to impose it on others. (Except, sadly, for their own children many of whom will suffer as a result or are doomed to carry on the self-delusion for yet another generation.)

I know. And I cringe. Not sure what else to do with it though. I tend to pragmatism. Any country of any importance that exists for any amount of time is going to get dirty, and you can't remove stains on the hands of countries. They fade with time but never disappear. Ideals usually get compromised in favor of desired results. *shrugs*

When I left the church 3 years ago I ran into this same mind set with a few people in Mormonism and still do. The first person was my Bishop when my Wife and I set up a meeting with him to tell him that we would no longer be coming to Church. When we meet in his office we told him that we no longer believed the church was "true" and I was ready to go into the many things that made us come to this conclusion. I started talking about some of the things that bothered us and he stopped me saying that we don't need to talk about those things. He then started telling me how the principles that the Church teaches is a good way to live and even if there was nothing after this life, it was a good way to live your life. He then paused after he said this and said "I believe it is true though" almost to correct the impression that he just gave us that there might not be anything after this life.
A few weeks later I broke the news to my parents which was not a fun experience. My Dad is very hard core TBM and of course he thought we were being lead by Satan himself. My Mom though made a very interesting comment by saying "Even if the Church was not true, it is the best thing out there" which caused my Dad to give her a sharp look. Again I tried to bring up some of the issues that concerned My wife and I and they didn't want to discuss those things. They just keep going back to how much the Church has helped them and they are better people for it.
Many times I wonder how many people there are in the LDS Church that really are not concerned if it is literally "true" or not. Of course I don't believe in Mormonism but the last few years I have trying to figure out if it does more Good than Harm. I guess it all depends on the person that is involved. My parents seem to be very happy in Mormonism but they are the type that Mormonism really works for. On the other hand my Mother-in-law has the type of personality where she never feels good enough and thinks that she has failed as a mother because only 2 (soon to be 1 I think) child is active in the LDS Church. It is very sad to see Mormonism control her. Mormonism does not work for her but she still believes that it is true but seems to be more controlled by fear.
As far as myself I feel comfort in knowing what is reality.
