The real problem is twofold. Non payment of tithing is the big one. If he was 'an honest tithepayer' all this would be moot. He would be a favorite of his Bishop, just as the $180 million swindler in Ogden, UT is/was. Extolled for his 'christlike behavior' to the Judge at sentencing, even while he swindled fellow ward members..., he paid tithing on the money he swindled.

It is the money.

The second is his public parading of skin. Doesn't matter that it is legal and for most, seen as harmless. It is skin. In public. I have friends who are Bishops who do figure photography. They are excellent and have international reputations for their work. They keep it low key and stick to the world of fine art. If they come out with calendars and publicity I have no doubt LDS, Inc. will come down hard on them.

Legal activity that is thought to be embarassing coupled with an attitude of independance is what causes this type of action/reaction from the old men in SLC.

Gaz...let me explain to you why your use of the word "fag" in your posts is bad form. Within certain socio-ethnic circles it's perfectly acceptable for one to refer to another using a slang term.

For example, it's acceptable for one person of color to refer to another or themselves using the "N" word. If you do it, it's a racial slur.

Similarly, when one woman addresses another woman directly as "bitch" (and yes, some do) or refers to herself as a "bitch", it's acceptable. If you do it, it's a sexual slur.

In this case of your post above, the word "fag" is more appropriately used by one gay person to address another gay person or to self describe. When you do it, it's a sexual slur as well.

Do you get that?

Within the class of persons using a slang term, it's acceptable.

Outside the class of persons using a slang term, it's bigotry and in appropriate.

I remember some years back when I was writing a post about Viet Nam and for the sake of brevity, I referred to it as "Nam". I took total heat from veterans for that remark and rightfully so. I didn't serve in Viet Nam, I had no right to violate or dilute their personal experience by using a term that was reserved for those who did serve and within their circle of comaraderie.

So here's the gist.

If you didn't serve in Viet Nam, it's not cool to call it "Nam".
If you aren't black, it's not cool to call a black person the "N" word.
If you aren't female, it's not cool to call a woman a "bitch".
If you aren't gay, it's not cool to call a gay man a "fag".

There are some things that just aren't done and please don't teach your children otherwise via your example. The world and life has enough hurt in it without us cavalierly inflicting it on others.

Porter...your asserting that construction workers are defined by lack of knowledge is as short sighted as the remarks that Gaz made. I can only assume that Gaz knows how to construct the house that you live in and you are dependent on the skills he has developed in his trade.

Just how many friends do you have that are bishops who all happen to do "figure photography"? Seems like the three sets of individuals (friends, bishops, "figure photographers") would not have enough overlap for you to be able to claim more than one individual in your circle of acquaintances that is in all three groups. This kind of obvious exaggeration tends to dilute any point one may have.

I can see how an ugly reference to a woman would be rude. That is insulting a gender. I can see how a racial slur is ugly, you insulting an entire race.

Homosexuals are neither of these. They are perverts. It is a sad and dreadful day we are seeing as this immoral choice of lifestyle is becoming more and more accepted. I see it in alot of the young apprentices that are joining the workforce. These types of topics come up in discussion, and they look at me all askew like I'm the crazy one for thinking this is sick and wrong.

I can remember as a kid hearing about how in the last days wrong would be seen as right and right would be seen as wrong. I remember thinking, "that's the dumbest thing I ever heard, how is that possible, everybody knows the difference between right and wrong". I think I was 8 years old at that time. I can see how its happened now. Apathy, Depravity, etc....

I'll try to refrain from the slang terms as it only makes me seem immature and ignorant. We need posters like Blixa here, and for be it from me to be the one who drives her off.
