Yeah, the latter. I think there have been times when I have argued with people about your essay, saying I didn't fully agree with it.

Its no secret that the artificial bifurcation between alleged "internet Mormons" and "chapel Mormons" is the creation of Shades mind, not an actual sociological phenomena. Its apparent purpose is to create a tool, useful in debate, that drives a intellectual and cultural wedge between one group of Mormons, the supposed literate, educated, and enlightened variety (and this always involves the implication that these Mormons are much more "liberal" and more likely to question official Church teachings and hold avant garde views on various issues), and the other variety; the pitchfork waving, uneducated, intellectually unsophisticated (unlike Shades), easily lead, philistine variety that populate the chapels and Stake Centers of the Church on Sunday's soaking up the whitewashed history and fairy tale theology fed to them by their semi-literate Bishops and gospel doctrine teachers.

That Sunstone and Dialog are long standing watering holes for cafeteria Mormons and unambiguous apostates is no secret either, and is probably viewed as somewhat of a sign of intellectual class distinction among this group.

No matter. The fact is that, given the Church's long standing emphasis on intellect, education, and life long searching for truth and knowledge "out of the best books", the internet and chapel Mormons are, for the most part, one and the same thing. No, many LDS don't participate in forums such as this (to their credit, perhaps), and have little interest, but this says nothing of their Gospel knowledge or their intellectual status in contrast to those who do.

In the end, the artificial chapel/internet Mormon dichotomy is just another exercise in intellectual class snobbery by the Church exmo and nonmember secular critics.

If you believe there was a global flood, and think that geological and biological science is wrong, then you are using a chapel Mormon approach to resolve this conflict.

The Church does not teach that geological and biological science is wrong. It does teach that the religion of which you are an unofficial member, the religion of metaphysical naturalism, or scientism, is wrong, but then, as this is not science, but philosophy, it has every right to be and and is on firm philosophical ground in so doing.

You have not previously shown much promise in your ability to differentiate your scientific beliefs from your beliefs regarding what you think science implies about the ultimate nature of the universe; that is: you do not seem to be able to differential between science and metaphysics, holding, as do other priests of the religion of scientism, that science performs, or can perform, what is in essence the function of metaphysics and religion and answer the same kinds of questions.

What this ultimately accomplishes is little more than the ultimate debasement of both science and religion.

Good ol' Trevor, always on hand for a hearty helping of bile, irrelevance, and intellectual evasion.

I wonder what it would take for this individual to actually engage in rational, critical debate and discussion?

Whatever it is, its probably against the Word of Wisdom...

I just knew I was right. So what is it, a nickel per word? Or per syllable, since you appear to be straining to use big words...

One of the things that I've always found funny about Shades's dichotomy is that, while I'm probably the archetypal "internet Mormon" -- adherent, according to Scratch, of an altogether distinct religion -- whenever I've taken one of Scratch's little diagnostic tests I always come out quite squarely as a "chapel Mormon."

Daniel already pointed out the stark reality here. The dichotomy is a concoction of Shades particular agenda and its intellectual prime directives, not an actual sociological phenomena. Educated, literate, computer savvy Mormons are also, in the modern age we live in, chapel Mormons, i.e., faithful, committed members of the Church.

Then of course, there are those who are not, but with the ubiquity of the computer and computer literacy, what else is to be expected? There are doubtless many highly educated, faithful members who don't discuss and debate or do apologetics on the net because they have no time, interest, or, having tested the water, found the ugly realities of that world not to their liking. And so?

When Shades comes up with some serious empirical evidence for such a cultural divide in the Mormon world, we can talk.

I've developed a sneaking (crawling, wriggling, and even undulating) suspicion of anyone who professes suspicion of others who use "big words".

Perhaps a remedial reading comprehension course at your local High School would be called for? And don't they sell vocabulary building courses on cassette tape or DVD?

Don't just sit there thinking up more insults, get on with it man.

By the way, Braniac, the singular is phenomenon, not phenomena. Just sayin'. But if you're being paid by the letter, that hint will help you earn just a tiny bit more...

What, you fear that they are even bigger conservative Republican toadies than you are? Fear not!
