Jason,
Do you think the temple ceremony of the time including the, 'you know what' had anything to do with MMM?

I don't want to get the thread moved and am not sure if I can say exactly to what I refer. Do you know about what I am talking?

Certainly there were elements of the temple ceremony, particularly at that time, that could have contributed to what happened at MMM. And yes I know what you are talking about.

Joseph Smith was out gunned in a close range gun battle. Poor planning on his part. He set the stage for that.
Poor planning? You think he planned to be in jail at the mercy of a mob intent on killing him? Now that's absurd. He wasn't a lamb to the slaughter, nor a martyr in the classic sense, but he certainly wasn't dead because of poor planning.
Good grief. Geez, P. You're getting more and more ridiculous as you age.

I'm curious if the book covers this to any extent.
Maybe James can give us the inside scoop here! ;-)
in my opinion, whether BY or any other leader specifically stated and gave direct orders for members to kill innocent people or not is not really the point.
I think that when believers (of any religion), promise and covenant to do certain things in the name of God, horrible events can take place. (I don't want to get too specific here).
Killing in the name of God, or for God is as old as the hills and a belief system (any one of many) set up to promote or encourage this, in my opinion is the foundation for the murder.

Why did he have the six shooter with him?msharmony wrote:Boaz & Lidia wrote:Which prophet was murdered in cold blood?Jason Bourne wrote:The cold blooded murder of their prophet help set the stage.

Did he not fire the pistol down the stairs at the approaching men?
Was it not reported by John Taylor that Smith did hit two men who later died?
Sounds like a gun battle to me.
Now had Smith approached the window and surrendered himself to them, that would have had more impact. But that wasn't who Smith was. He was a coward who cared only for himself.

I'm not arguing the gun battle or his cowardice or fearlessness. I'm saying he wasn't dead because of poor planning, as you stated.

Warren Jeffs got caught because of his poor planning. He had been on the run from the law for years. His Escalade was stopped because the temporary tag, issued in Colorado, was not clearly visible.. poor planning.msharmony wrote:I'm not arguing the gun battle or his cowardice or fearlessness. Likewise, Smith was on the run from the law for years. He also knew how many people felt about him and his wife stealin, money fixing, mason ritual copying, press destroying militia mentality and that many wanted to see him dead. I guess he miscalculated how many in and outside of his following wanted to see him dead.
Smuggling in a sixshooter? Poor planning.
