Website suggestions

Post by _beastie »

Ok, I'm opening the floor again to suggestions on making my website more readable. I know I will hate myself for doing it, because I really hate fooling with the tech side of my website, mainly due to the fact that my tech ignorance ensures that every change will be as painful as possible. My goal isn't to make my website look like a professional designed it, but I do realize that I could probably make it easier to access and read. But there are a couple updates I need to make, anyway, so might as well bite the bullet.

So what should I do? Should I divide up the longer pages so you keep clicking to put the next subsection on a new page?

I will ask in advance that everyone excuse my inevitable whining and complaining and saying "But I can't figure out HOW to do that". It's beyond my control. ;)

OTOH, if it looks great the way it is and I don't need to change anything, that would be welcome news, too!

Beastie,

I've looked through your website quite a few times. But it's been a while. I'm writing this so I'll remember to look and comment back.

I do agree that breaking it down into smaller sub-sections might make it more readable.

I'd suggest dumbing it down for people like me and gramps. More pictures, colourful fonts, perhaps some ancient porn. Or recent porn. We're not that picky.

You think you're dumb......look at me.
I think it would be morally right to lie about your religion to edit the article favorably.

What? You're like way smart. Potatoes are brainfood [don't you know], and when you're brain is a tater, then it must be like...superbrainfood.

Alright but seriously. I just looked at beastie's website. I think the layout is good at it's easy to read. Chopping it down would work, but then it might be complicated the other way, with dozens of links to tiny little tidbits rather than huge swaths of material. I think it's fine the way it is.

If "readability" is your goal, then I think you are doing great. The text is very clear and readable.

My only comment would be about navigation; you might consider some type of sidebar or menu system that allows people to get to other sections without going back to the main page. Also, you could add "Previous" and "Next" pointers at the top and bottom of each page so people can read through the entire site more fluidly.

I think it could do with some tidying up. I agree with Scottie that longer sections could be divided up, with specific headings (links) to the relevant "chapters", which open in separate links. It can be burdensome going back and forth. The page on "Horses" is very long, and it's difficult going back and forth from top to bottom to check earlier references. That page takes a long time to fully load, so I'd say it could be divided up.

My opinion is that all links should be like this: The Early Coexistence of Avars and Slavs, not this: http://mek.oszk.hu/03400/03407/html/46.html. As This Site does, which appears similar to yours (no untidy links there).

"Past Debates and Conversations" could be the exception.

This link doesn't work, not for me anyway:

"A summary of the Popol Vuh may be found here: http://www.isourcecom.com/maya/books/popolvuh.htm (Holy Lords, Divine Kingship)."

The tidying up is burdensome work, but it counts to making the site more professional.

Cinepro,

I do include links at the bottom of the main text on each page that links back to the table of contents and to the next page. Is that what you mean, or something different? Should I put it at the very bottom of the page instead of at the bottom of the text?

Re Ray's suggestion - can anyone tell me how to format it so that I can retitle the link?

I know how to do it on this site, thanks to someone who got sick of seeing dummies like me provide long links:

Type words to describe link here

Is that the same thing I would do on a website? I use frontpage, if that makes any difference.

No porn!!! :P Well, I guess I could try to think of a reason to include this:

Hope you enjoyed it, boys. That's as good as it's gonna get.
