There is nothing wrong about what I said. I'm sure that FARMS, with its multi-million-dollar budget, and with its well-compensated Board members, is the envy of all the lesser apologetic organizations. In fact, I bet they have modeled their listserves after l-skinny.

FARMS, or, more properly, the Maxwell Institute, has no board, and hasn't had one in several years. (As I've pointed out more than once.) And well-compensated? Not really. For most of its existence, the board received nothing at all. For its last few years, board members received $3000 per annum, which compensated them for attendance at monthly business meetings, hours of writing reports and studying reports, hours of evaluating research publication proposals, service on subcommittees (e.g. to award scholarships, plan conferences, and the like), public speaking engagements, and etc. The board fee was hardly lavish.

Skinny-L is a small private list to which (have I mentioned this before?) you have no real access and of which (perhaps I've neglected to tell you?) you know essentially nothing. It's only partially concerned with apologetic matters -- mostly not, I should think -- and is certainly not the dramatic and sinister e-cabal that it clearly excites you to fantasize about. So there's no reason at all why anybody would model any other private list on it.

Shades,

Don't you live south of SLC? I'm going to be at the D.Book in the University Mall (Orem/Provo) tomorrow from about 1pm to 2pm-ish (book signing). If you're in the area, stop by & say, "hi."

Thanks for the invitation, Mike! I'd love to take you up on it--the University Mall is just a little over 10 minutes away from my place--but I'll be at work at that time, and work is in Salt Lake County.

Thanks anyway,
Shades

The bit about FAIR deciding to be less "in your face" is interesting. On a recent thread (and I no longer remember which one, if I find it later I'll link it), Juliann also seemed to insinuate a deliberate change of tactic, towards reduced aggression. I can only imagine how difficult that must be for her. Perhaps it's in response to recent GA advice regarding internet interactions. Whether or not it pans out remains to be seen.

I agree that it is very interesting. Even DCP has noted that he is at last starting to take seriously the many complaints about FARMS's ridiculous aggression. I also agree that it will be very difficult for these folks to let go of their essential hostility and penchant for personal attack.

You mean Mr. Meldrum. Seriously, the FAIR open letter turning Brother Meldrum into Mr. Meldrum was as vindictive and aggressive a move as I've ever seen, and no I don't think I'm reading too much into it. It's shocking how with that one little choice of title they completely strip Meldrum of his implied co-equal status as a brother in the church to all the readers of that letter. He's no longer "one of us" - as Mr. Meldrum he's impliedly "one of them". It strips him of his Mormon identity, on purpose, to play to the Mormon tendency to disbelieve things of a religious nature coming from outsiders as a matter of course.
Mormonism ceased being a compelling topic for me when I finally came to terms with its transformation from a personality cult into a combination of a real estate company, a SuperPac, and Westboro Baptist Church. - Kishkumen

Would "implicitly" do?
