27 Mormons setting a fine example on the sabbath!
Over at the mormontimes website, there is an article proudly announcing 27 Mormons who are in the NFL.
Big whoop? And besides, now these men are not only working on the SABBATH, but many work for sponsors who sell items that Jebus forbids!

Re: 27 Mormons setting a fine example on the sabbath!
Jason said, "Boring".
How is it boring? Every week, across North America, Europe, and the developing world, new converts and older members are told they shouldn't work on Sunday. They are told that there are blessings to be had for giving up jobs that require Sunday work. Many of them are in jobs that are menial, yet provide the basics of life to them and their families.
Here are a few of the articles, found during a quick search of LDS.org, that teach this principle:
http://tinyurl.com/5tlbry
http://tinyurl.com/5opswc
http://tinyurl.com/5s39po
http://tinyurl.com/6f593o
http://tinyurl.com/6l47z6 (Look under "Sabbath on the Ranch")
http://tinyurl.com/69ozfm (Look under "What Kind of Restaurant is This?")
Yet here we have quite a few university educated Latter-Day Saints who presumably have other options available other than working on Sunday. They aren't air traffic controllers, police officers, doctors, ambulance drivers, or any of the other professionals whose work on Sunday saves lives. And it isn't only OK that they play on Sunday, it is celebrated by other Mormons.

Thanks for the insightful thread. I remember a long time ago I was watching a Jazz game on TV, I think it was some big important finals game or something, and Larry H. Miller either came on very briefly or delivered a statement, but it was made known that he wasn't attending the game because he felt that would be in conflict with his religious beliefs about keeping the Sabbath day holy.
God knows how much money he put in his pocket that day, on the Sabbath. God knows how much money Marriott is socking away every Sunday from porn rentals and alcohol sales in his bars alone. Niether of these guys even flinch, and the church, benefiting tremendously in tithes, says nothing. Yet, you'll see a single mother who can barely put food on the table distraught over whether she should be working on Sunday or not for 8$ an hour that she desperately needs to provide for her family.

Lou Midgley 08/20/2020: "...meat wad," and "cockroach" are pithy descriptions of human beings used by gemli? They were not fashioned by Professor Peterson.

Many here seek the most nominal issues to make hay about. This is one of them. Thus I say whoopee poopee.

You have very low standards for what is insigthful.
God knows how much money he put in his pocket that day, on the Sabbath.
I am sure he does.

Really now. I really doubt anyone would really discourage someone in such a situation from working Sunday if this were the woman's decision. I doubt you have ever seem such a think in real life.

Now Jason, be careful you are reading things into what I said,

Re: 27 Mormons setting a fine example on the sabbath!
I wonder what Spencer Kimball would think about this being "no big deal".
What else can we consider playing football on Sunday to be but "working to increase wealth", especially when those playing have other marketable skills and are more than able to provide for their families while working jobs that would allow them to keep the Sabbath day holy.
And I'm sorry Jason, but it's been my experience that pressuring members of the church not to work on Sunday is a common practice in Latin America.
President Spencer W. Kimball (1895–1985) taught: “In such activities our motives are a most important consideration. When men and women are willing to work on the Sabbath to increase their wealth, they are breaking the commandments; for money taken in on the Sabbath, if the work is unnecessary, is unclean money” (“The Sabbath—A Delight,” Tambuli, July 1978, 5; Ensign, Jan. 1978, 5).

Perhaps Jason is hiding something?
1. He watches football every Sabbath.
2. He works on the Sabbath
3. His wife works on the Sabbath
4. He is just pissed about defending such a lame religion
5. All of the above

Re: 27 Mormons setting a fine example on the sabbath!
I don't think it's "nominal" at all. When I was a missionary we were very explicit about not working on Sundays. Very explicit. Not following the Lord's commandments have resulted in all the world's ills, and thus a Mormon openly flauting the Lord is something of a contradiction (in addition to a Mormon supporting it). Maybe the Lord has mellowed out recently, and doesn't get so uptight about His disciplies cherry picking which rules to follow...
