I do not believe even for an instant that there is any 'strategic' use of alcohol connected in any way with BYU.

But then, I didn't believe there were any bribes connected with the SLC Olympics either, so maybe I'm not the best judge of things in Utah.

So BYU faculty understanding that some guests they might have come to the university might not share the LDS views on alcohol and either keeping alcoholic beverages on hand or purchasing them before such guest arrive so their guests can partake is proof of what... Good hospitality?

Well, yes, basically. Certain BYU LDS are willing to "compromise" when it comes to certain individuals. Credibility is something that can be bought, and plenty of academics are willing to sell it.
