My own pet theory? McCain misdirected everyone on purpose. The media was caught totally off guard because they never pay attention to right-wing blogs.
Unless McCain also misdirected most or all of his campaign, that theory seems out of whack with reports of their unpreparedness that came out after the pick. Heck, Palin's convention speech had to be rewritten because its initial drafts were written for a masculine voice.

I buy the mainstream theory that McCain wanted Lieberman while his advisors supported someone like Pawlenty. When McCain finally accepted that Lieberman would be political suicide and Pawlenty was to continue a losing track, Palin was selected as a longshot attempt to rile up the religious right and take a stab at the female vote. This was done with little advance preparation. There's evidence of that all over the place, not the least of which is that Palin is being coddled and largely kept from the media because she hasn't received nearly enough advance preparation.

Welcome to my ignore list Angus. You are a sexist troll and it's very clear that attempting to dialogue with you on anything would be a precious waste of my time. I realize that will inspire a "WAH, you can't handle me!" post, but hey, you're a troll. That's what you do.

You were the one who started in with the name-calling and then dropped it to blatant gutter talk; your post went exactly where it deserved to go, and you can't even deal with that gracefully.

Have a nice life.

How is she being coddled? She has done some major interviews since the convention. Granted, I would like to see her do more.

I think that the debates are going to really make or break all of the candidates. I'm excited to see Friday's foreign policy debate between Obama and McCain.

Obama really needs to be clear on his positions, and not simply rely on polish if he is going to gain the country's confidence in him as a Commander in Chief. That is where McCain really has an advantage, in my opinion. Like it or not, the country IS still at war...and I'm not talking about JUST the situation in Iraq (which I think we need to be out of), but Al Qaeda still has an intent to take down the US, and we are going to need someone to handle that situation effectively.

Although I am a registered Republican, I am very open to a new approach, and to hearing what Obama has to offer. I just haven't heard anything solid from him yet in the area of foreign policy, except for the fact that he voted against going into Iraq (which I respect him for).

In this age of leaks, there would not have been much potential for misdirection if he'd let the entire campaign know who the pick would be. I think he kept a tight lid on it even within his own campaign for that purpose, and the speech originally being written in the masculine would be no surprise. Writing it in the feminine would have given away the pick, plus if it really came down between her and Pawlenty, it kind of had to be written in one gender or the other.

From above:
One side has been much worse about this than the other.

I agree that one side has been much worse about this than the other. Since this is the sort of thing that's difficult to objectively quantify (quote wars probably isn't going to do it), I think we'll just have to disagree on which side it is.

Here's what I think. You can't directly tell if a person is a feminist without seeing some extensive history of feminist advocacy or agreement to some ideas that form the core of what we are getting at when we talk about feminism. It's a loose term, but there are borders. Normally, we just take a person's word for it when they call themselves a feminist, but I think the circumstances require some skepticism in this case. Unfortunately, simply saying, "I support equality for men and women" isn't enough because people who are anything but feminists have coopted that language to refer to what is essentially separate "but equal" roles for men and women. You're not going to be able to tell where Palin is without more detail than we have access too or some definitive statements lack the luxury of having. It's not especially important, but I think that's where it stands.

That's a fair enough position, but as mentioned earlier it's hard to pin her down as being not feminist. If folks would like to say "I haven't seen enough from her yet to say she's feminist," that's a lot more acceptable to me than outright insisting she isn't feminist, is anti-feminist, anti-woman, etc.

Hello Jack Meyers,

I have seen Angus McAwesome call names to just about everybody here, who does not agree with his Liberal Political views. It is best to put him on your ignore list, since he is a rude troll here.
You are awesome and Great, Jack Meyers!. :)

The crazy liberal feminists who are screeching about how Palin isn't a feminist or (even funnier) isn't a woman remind me of a certain group we all know who like to screech about how Mormons aren't Christians.

Yet's it's Palin that's more of a feminist and a woman than they are.

Wow, so every that doesn't immeadiately agree with your narrow minded far right world view is automatically a "liberal". So what's it like being a moronic absolutist that thinks everything is either/or, black and white, good or evil?

Why do I care, after all, you're just another intellectual coward that'll hide behind the foe list because you're unable or unwilling to defend your BS.

See what I was talking about when I said that the Friend/Foe list feature basicaly means the death of any actual debate, Shades?

Ahem....OK, children, if we're done bickering, let's get back on topic. ;)

Angus, as an Obama supporter, what advice would you have for him for Friday?

Edited to add---And don't say he doesn't need any advice. That's no fun. ;)

That's just it, Miss Liz... I'm not an Obama supporter. I'm not even a Democrat. I've voted Republican in every presidential election since I first registered to vote. That said...

The GOP has changed so much in the last eight years that I'm starting to think Ike was caused by Abe Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, and Ronald Reagan spinning in their graves over the complete cock-up of conservative values the GOP has become.

As far as advice for Obama... Stop saying "um" so damned much. Watch the man talk during interviews or anytime he isn't giving a prepared speech. He says "um..." so much you could make a drinking game out of it and be well on your way to good and hammers inside of five minutes.

Good riddance :) The forums are a much better place without his hateful screeds.
