Odd though. We do not want the media to call us the Mormon Church nor do we want that to be the official name in any respect. But we do not want the FLDS or any other polyg group to use Mormon because we say it is ours and ours alone to use.
As long as others perpetuate it and apply it to us, why not?

Because it it a double standard. Ask EVs why they think we should not be called Christian.
How so? Looking at the OP, "Mormon Church" is being used by individuals in their own words.
Can you read? We, yes we (more below) want to control who can be called Mormon and who cannot. We do not want splinter groups to call themselves Mormon because we think they are too different. Yet when traditional Christian sects want to deny us the title of Christian because they view our doctrine as too far removed from orthodoxy we cry foul.

"We"??? LOL!
Yes BC. I am LDS as much as you are. I hold a TR and am an active participant in a ward. I know in your rigid inability to think for yourself anyone who questions what you view as the church party line is an apostate but guess what dude, you are wrong.
Crickey, 'Mormon' is just a nickname. Like any other - suitable for casual use, but should not be used in formal writing. The insitance on using the full COJCOLDS is surely only necessary because of the existance of other LDS (Mormon) sects.
When I was a youngster, a respected high priest in a nearby area was found to be a child molester. My mother explained to us kids that he wasn't a 'real' Mormon.
Since I have not resigned, I am labelled 'inactive' but still 'Mormon'. So I do not identify as Mormon, but am still counted in NZ membership stats. Plygs consider themselves to be Mormon, and sure act a lot more Mormon than me, but they are not 'real' Mormons.
Now watching the exchange between bcspace and Jason, I am beginning to wonder what a 'real' Mormon is?
