Doesn't that strike you as deceitful. If not, why?
I'm not sure deceitful is the right word. I think "unimportant" is a better word. Contrast between "accurate art" and "buying billion dollar rundown downtown malls" and what comes up as unimportant?
These guys are businessmen, first and foremost, and that's where their emphasis lies.
(Nevo, Jan 23) And the Melchizedek Priesthood may not have been restored until the summer of 1830, several months after the organization of the Church.

It doesn't strike me as deceitful, no. People can be inaccurate without being deceitful. Take Sarah Palin, for example. :)

Depends on how you analyze the art. It is, above all, art.

I see what you're saying, but for the sake of argument, if the Mormon church is placing inaccurate art in its teaching manuals that depict the translation process as being something that it's not, and then selectively uses resources or quotes to paint a picture that the art accurately represents said translation... Then isn't that deceitful?
I wonder if an artist were to paint a nice enough picture of "head in the hat" if the Church would feel comfortable using it in place of the more inaccurate art....
What do you think?

I would hope so; I think that would be great. I've used a 'head in hat' picture on my blog before.
