The story would be funny if it wasn't so stupid. And Lucy was said to be the brains of the family!

Assailant #1- "gave him a heavy blow with a gun. Joseph turned around and knocked him down, then ran at the top of his speed."

Assailant #2-"About half a mile further he was attacked again in the same manner as before; he knocked this man down in like manner as the former, and ran on again."

Assailant #3-"And before he reached home he was assaulted the third time."

There is that ever present number 3 again. What are the chances that so many things happened to Joseph precisely 3 times?

And these assailants, with guns in hand, get pushed down by Joseph and, what, give up, pass out? And who thought their best chance to get the plates was to split up and attack him one at a time?

This stuff is right out of the old Batman TV series.

And why would he run and take them out of the hiding place? They're in a hiding place for a reason. They're not at his house for a reason. They're hidden. His retrieving the plates from their hiding place would have undone the whole reason for hiding them in the first place.

And just think about all the trouble everyone went through for these plates. Moroni, or Mormon, or whoever had to pound out a seperate section on the gold plates because they foresaw Martin Harris losing the manuscript. Then Moroni had to trek thousands of miles to bury the plates close to Joseph Smith's future home. Then Joseph had to run through the woods with them, gimpy leg and all, while being attacked by three seperate mysterious men (maybe it was the three nephites trying to help him out and he mistook them for attackers). Then he has to keep them hidden from snoopy people, while trying to translate them using a scribe. Then Martin Harris has to sell his farm and ruin his marriage to get it published. And what was the final product for this huge enormous effort? The Book of Mormon. A book that is believed by roughly 0.6% of the world. If he wasn't so secretive about the plates, and allowed other people, maybe even experts, to examine the plates, and translate them perhaps the Book of Mormon would be more credible today. But I guess that wouldn't require as much faith as the secretive translation method.

Ok guys, as a bullet caster I happen to have a box with probably 100 lbs of lead ingots in it (actually, not pure lead, rather an alloy of lead, tin, and antimony that's used in the weights they use to balance tires with).

I'd like to make a small wooden box of the same dimensions as the golden plates and have it weigh in at 60 lbs.

What are the outside dimensions I should be going for? Someone mentioned 4" thick by 7" wide by 8" tall. Is that in accordance with whatever accounts there are from people who supposedly saw them?

By the way, one difference between carrying a 60 lb bar (say, a bench-press bar with however many small weights brings that up to 60 lbs) and carrying a 4x7x8 inch brick is that the bar you can wrap your hand around and carry like a handle, whereas the box you can't. It's the whole "it's not really the weight, it's just awkward" thing we've all run into from time to time when moving, or helping others move.
Mormonism ceased being a compelling topic for me when I finally came to terms with its transformation from a personality cult into a combination of a real estate company, a SuperPac, and Westboro Baptist Church. - Kishkumen

Please. I'm genuinely interested in someone attempting to run "x" amount of distance with 40+ lbs tucked under his arm.

I do a fair amount of crossfit training, incorporating kettlebells, and as far as I'm concerned, the story is impossible. Not only is this from my "a priori", but it's also from observing some alpha-alphas do their thing.

You pulling numbers out of your ass completely throws off my b***s*** detector. First off you claim the standard "bench press bar" is 55 pounds. I don't know what a "bench press bar" is but as someone pointed out to you earlier it's 45lbs not 55lbs. Ok, honest mistake right? How about your 240 and 350 claims? Here is where it gets really sketchy. How would someone go about benching 240?

As we pointed out before the bar is 45lbs. It's a odd number and the plates you put on either side will always be an even number. They come in standard weights of 45,25,10, & 5 pounds. That's why you'll hear someone commonly say I press 185, 225, 255, 275 etc... The only way you get a numbers like BC claims of 240 or 350 is if you go and find those 2.5lb rings somewhere in the gym(if they have them) and slide those puppies on the end for effect.

So for his 350lb squat he puts on six 45lb plates, two 10lb plates, two 5lb plates, and two 2.5lb plates.

So next time you reach into your hind quarters to pull out your fictional strength numbers make sure they are at lease plausible and try not to get all of the simple details wrong.

Umm...you could bench 240 on a machine.

Your decimal is in the wrong place. It's actually closer to .08%.

The chances are around 100% that he'd have to have exactly three attackers, going after him independently to steal the plates. Since Hiram Abiff had three independent attackers trying to steal the secrets of freemasonry. lol

BC,

It's Lucy Mack Smith's story, that has been repeated, re-printed, and taught untold times to members of the church, by the church... And you know this.

Are you now going to throw Joseph Smith's mother under the bus?

Okay, so please quote the part that says what the OP does. Joseph Smith punched three guys as he ran home. Altogether? One at a time? Did he drop the plates when he did this? etc. etc.

What details here invalidate the story? What details match what the OP claimed?

Seems to imply that you don't do much weighlifting. The 2.5 plates are easily assessible and make a big difference between getting the lift or not.

Free weights. You can do significantly more on most machines, unless the're the real expensive type that are actually made to be accurate or whose cables are not out of adjustment.
