It finally became clear to me that I have no interest in yet another Scratch v. DCP thread or another collegeterrace v. whatever he's against thread. The front page has become rather lame. I know that free speech can be really lame, even if the ideal is noble.

This is representative of my impression of MDB as of today: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQalRPQ8stI.

Since I preference the idea of MDB more than I preference my impression of the current state of MDB, I'll leave the participants with it--no hard feelings. But, I'm no longer interested, personally.

My inner eighth-grader really appreciated the fart-horn gesture, though. That was awesome.

There was a time when I would have told you to create new topics that you think would be of interest to yourself and others but your post above reflects exactly what I was thinking earlier today. I don't plan to go into details here however, suffice it to say you're not alone in your perspective.

I've actually become a big fan of the ignore feature. I have a number of people on it, but I will not mention names. That does not mean I never read their posts, however. It just makes navigating the board easier. Let's just say, for instance, there is someone who either annoys you or posts a lot and while you can easily skip the posts, you have to constantly scroll over and it can become tiring. With the ignore feature, it will just put that persons name where they posted. Sometimes you'll see the person's name three or four times in a row and realized you've saved yourself a lot of scrolling. And then if someone captures what they said in a quote and you want to follow up, or if you become curious about what the person said, you can click a link that will reveal just that post, and that one only. So I find it very convenient.

The only "feature" I don't like and I really hate to complain when I know running a board is a lot of work and not a huge payoff, is that when you begin to respond to a post, and if someone else posts between the time you clicked reply and submit, then it doesn't submit, it will ask you over and over if you really want to submit because so-and-so has just posted, and if that person is on your ignore list, it doesn't hide the post.

I have voted to the 5th option.

It is the majority (56% at this time) and I don't like it ! I want to be UNIQUE !!!

Is there any method to learn if I am on any list of anybody?
I don't care, REALLY ! (It is only the eternal desire of knowledge ...)

I love it. In geek terms it is a notch filter.

Also one can note that PP at least uses the ignore as a cowards way out. He can slam people on his ignore list and pat himself on the back without ever having to be held to the fire for his asininity.

Ok

Now I understand this I voted I do not have anyone on my ignore list and my experience has been the same here. If someone wants to ignore me more power to them.

However, that said, I think it in the long run is bad for what Shades intends the board to be-a free wheeling open discussion. Why does someone need some feature to ignore someone else and hide their posts? Can't they handle just ignoring it on their own? If no then doesn't the ignore feature really suppress free speech and open discussion?

If you are asking for opinions I offer mine as I do not like it and it inhibits interaction.

This is where you an I differ on what impact the ignore feature has: you propose that it inhibits interaction and open discussion. For me, the people that may be on my ignore list are not people that I would interact or discuss with. So there is no net difference on discussion or interaction. The benefit is that I don't need to scroll past or try to "unsee" what may have been posted. I can follow the parts of a discussion that I would perhaps want to interact with, and focus resources there.

So as for me, there is no inhibition on interaction or suppression of speech.

Again, just because somebody says something doesn't mean everybody has to read it. Does everybody read every post? I'd guess not many do. So we already self-select, and nobody's speech has been suppressed as a result.

It is quite simple to skip posts without ignore. No one does not need to read every post. But when it is used like PP/Boaz/college whatever uses it then it does. PP is a drive by poster and post nonesense and flamboyant remarks. He does not want to be held accountable for his idiocy do he blocks those who typically challenge him. Of course he could ignore anyone even without the block but he cannot resist when he sees the post. But when he does not he can make comments about he person he blocks, like he did here, as well as in his sig line pointing out who he blocks, then it does inhibit free exchange.

But this is a small matter. Ultimately I do not care. Just sharing some thoughts.

This I can agree with.

My thoughts. I would never use the ignore feature as I want to know if anyone is responding to me so that I in turn can respond. I don't post much anymore but I want to know if anyone responds to me in case it requires a response. Agreement might come from the oddest poster or disagreement form some just as unlikely to raise it, I want the opportunity to deal with both those events.

Frankly I'm suprised that this board went in for an ignore feature, particularly after all the talk about free speech, open forum, and "you're opinion will be heard" stuff. But whatever. I think the board has been worse for the feature because it undermines the mission statement of the board.
