Be Courageous - - Support Prop 8

Post by _rcrocket »

Expressing one’s opinion with a sign is as American as American can be. As well, presidential politics is as American as American can be.

Both presidential candidates, including Barack Obama, whom I support, have stated that they are against gay marriage. Both vice presidential candidates have said they are against gay marriage.

Hillary Clinton, whom I supported with my checkbook (look, you’ll see) did not support gay marriage. http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/story?id=2612368 President Clinton, whom I supported, did not support gay marriage.

The federal government is against gay marriage. The Senate, by a vote of 84-14, and the house, by a vote of 342-67, and President Clinton by his signature, signed the Defense of Marriage Act, which holds:

1. No state (or other political subdivision within the United States) need treat a relationship between persons of the same sex as a marriage, even if the relationship is considered a marriage in another state.
2. The Federal Government may not treat same-sex relationships as marriages for any purpose, even if concluded or recognized by one of the states.

It has been stated many times that a support for Prop 8 supports hate. My gay partners and employees know that I support Proposition 8. They know I don’t hate them or hate gays.

But, with all these politicians and the federal government saying the same thing, they must have some basis of support for it. And so do I — traditional marriage between a man and a woman is the best possible basis upon which to raise a family and support those pieces of society (schools, churches) which support children and the families which raise them. Gay marriage is not an acceptable burden upon society.

I urge you to vote yes for Proposition 8. If you are a Californian, that is.

How many gay partners have you had so far?

Sorry, no can do. But I do appreciate your civil approach.

(Incidentally, I do believe that the opposition to gay marriage professed by some of the Democratic politicians you've named is more opportunistic than ideological. I think that they are politically afraid to support it at this point.)

I think it self apparent, but I am not the author of the various studies, scientific and otherwise, against gay marriage, that can easily be googled.

Is this list wrong? (I don't follow politics, this is the first political thing I've done a web search on in at least a year)

http://www.ontheissues.org/Barack_Obama.htm

Obama:

# Opposes CA Prop. 8, one-man-one-woman marriage. (Jul 2008)
# Being gay or lesbian is not a choice. (Nov 2007)
# Decisions about marriage should be left to the states. (Oct 2007)
# Homosexuality no more immoral than heterosexuality. (Oct 2007)
# Ok to expose 6-year-olds to gay couples; they know already. (Sep 2007)
# Has any marriage broken up because two gays hold hands? (Aug 2007)
# We need strong civil unions, not just weak civil unions. (Aug 2007)
# Legal rights for gays are conferred by state, not by church. (Aug 2007)
# Disentangle gay rights from the word "marriage". (Aug 2007)
# Gay marriage is less important that equal gay rights. (Aug 2007)
# Gay rights movement is somewhat like civil rights movement. (Aug 2007)
# Let each denominations decide on recognizing gay marriage. (Jul 2007)
# Pass ENDA and expand hate crime legislation. (Mar 2007)
# Opposed 1996 Illinois DOMA bill. (Mar 2007)
# Supports health benefits for gay civil partners. (Oct 2006)
# Opposes gay marriage; supports civil union & gay equality. (Oct 2006)
# Marriage not a human right; non-discrimination is. (Oct 2004)
# Include sexual orientation in anti-discrimination laws. (Jul 1998)

Apart from Palin (and possibly McCain), I believe their "support" was simple political expediency.

The federal government is against gay marriage. The Senate, by a vote of 84-14, and the house, by a vote of 342-67, and President Clinton by his signature, signed the Defense of Marriage Act ....

Same political expediency.

It has been stated many times that a support for Prop 8 supports hate. My gay partners and employees know that I support Proposition 8. They know I don’t hate them or hate gays.

I think "hate" is too strong a word -- I prefer "bigotry" (for many this is based on ignorance or undue paranoia).

But, with all these politicians and the federal government saying the same thing, they must have some basis of support for it.

Yep, politics. Take that out of the equation, and a just (and consitutional) conclusion is often reached (for example, recent decisions by the MA, CA, and Conn. courts).

And so do I — traditional marriage between a man and a woman is the best possible basis upon which to raise a family and support those pieces of society (schools, churches) which support children and the families which raise them. Gay marriage is not an acceptable burden upon society.

I find this statement odd, since I presume you spring from polygamous marriages (which the Prophet Jacob in the Book of Mormon referred to as an "abomination"). Putting that aside, I don't see how gay marriage is any kind of "burden" on society.

I urge you to vote yes for Proposition 8. If you are a Californian, that is.

And I urge you to vote NO against Prop. 8 -- rank discrimination against an entire segment of society has no place in this great country, in my opinion.

You owe my company a new monitor..
God has the right to create and to destroy, to make like and to kill. He can delegate this authority if he wishes to. I know that can be scary. Deal with it.

Rcrocked: I urge you to vote yes for Proposition 8. If you are a Californian, that is.

Me: Nah. This Californian is voting NO. One of the biggest regrets I have (looking back at myself when I was LDS) is supporting proposition 22 eight years ago. Lucky for me I have the opportunity to repent of that bigotry, and help the gay community preserve their rights. I hope you will join me. Vote NO on prop 8!
