I didn't find the link under Legal Issues. I found it under Press.

And what I want to know is, are criminal charges going to be filed? And if so, when can we expect that to happen?

You're right, my mistake. It's under Press.

Criminal charges filed by who? There are talks of a class action lawsuit that I am aware of.

Filed by the state. Filed by the DA. Filed by someone who has stewardship over teenage boys!
(Nevo, Jan 23) And the Melchizedek Priesthood may not have been restored until the summer of 1830, several months after the organization of the Church.

I don't know. I'd be interested in pursuing criminal charges. I'd certainly be willing to press charges against a Brent Sanderson (spelling?) of Gunnison, Utah.

Maybe after what he has done becomes public he'll come out of the woodwork and try and sue me or something for using his real name in my book.

That would be ideal.

Why don't you press charges?

The latest testimonial from Chris W, I have to say, is rather disturbing:

I don’t know why we never realized the abuse we were enduring was actually “abuse” it was brutal and cruel but for some reason we never though it was illegal. Looking back I realize it happened just about every day. It is just like every program it looks perfect on the outside but what happens inside is far from it.

On his examples of abuse (not by any means as harsh as the others), he lists this one:

-Restrained for not reading the Book of Mormon

If this is true, how does this mesh with D&C 121?:

41 No power or influence can or ought to be maintained by virtue of the priesthood, only by persuasion, by long-suffering, by gentleness and meekness, and by love unfeigned;

From "Mormon Influence":

Furthermore, we have no reason to believe that current Church leaders have any knowledge of the abusive, unethical, and illegal operations of the Utah Boys Ranch. Rather, we believe the opposite. It is our hope that Church members will do what they can to help distance themselves from this place.

Hopefully the Church (or maybe the SCMC?) is looking at GoodK's website.

In light of all this, it is now little wonder to me why GoodK responded to his step-father's email the way he did.

So I'll reverse D&C 123 to apply to the "Mormon Gulag":

13 Therefore, that we should waste and wear out our lives in bringing to light all the hidden things of darkness, wherein we know them; and they are truly manifest from heaven—
14 These should then be attended to with great earnestness.
15 Let no man count them as small things; for there is much which lieth in futurity, pertaining to the saints, which depends upon these things.

GoodK:

How did the filming at the Scarecrow Festival protest go?

Also, what was the protest itself like?

I really wanted to go, but DARN IT, I completely forgot. I'm kicking myself right now.

Shades,

Could you find a link to the local news that might have covered the protest? I'd sure like to see it.

Edited: I searched and found nothing at all.

Thank you, GoodK, for making this abuse known to the public. These institutions are wrong. Just wrong.

The protest was better then expected. Sorry you missed it, Shades. Maybe next year.

Photo's and video will be up on the website: www.mormongulag.com this week, I hope. A brief run down:
I showed up a bit late, around 2:30 to find quite a lot of people already protesting with picket signs, ropes, and wool blankets. I showed up with fliers (also on the website this week) and talked to the twenty five or thirty men and women who came out to protest the Utah Boys Ranch. Apparently all of the local news stations had been contacted, as well as the local papers, but I did not see any reporters.
When I got there I was immediately surrounded by staff members - apparently the word got out that I was coming and it created a slight "buzz." I was there for so long and was liked by most of the staff, so those that knew and liked me came out to say hi. I said hello, hugged a few old friends, and endured some veiled threats.
I did an interview for a Utah film student and passed out fliers. I talked to a lot of people. I talked to former staff members (more on the website later) and got some great information.
One of my friends came inside with me and talked to a few of the boys that were working there. She was skeptical about some of the claims of abuse, too, until the first two random boys she talked to confirmed what we had been saying. I was really moved by the welcome I received by both the protestors and people at the festival. After talking to a handful of staff I am convinced that the few good people that work there don't want to be associated with the abusive and bad practices and will cooperate to bring about change. I was told that much has changed since Buttars left. Whether I believe that or not is another question, but I appreciated them telling me that and also admitting that things did need to change. A former staff member that I was close with who is now a Cottonwood Heights police officer told me some stories (which may appear on the website) and told me that he suspended or fired at least six staff members for excessive violence or other serious infractions while he was there. He acknowledged that he witnessed a lot of things he didn't like.
I rekindled a lot of old relationships and extended the Mormon Gulag / Utah Boys Ranch Network even more.
We succeeded in turning away a lot of people. We had even more success in giving out fliers (with the website on it) to hundreds of families. One of the best thing to come about from this protest was convincing a major donor to pull their funding completely. Even better, the donor that did this owned a helicopter ride company. He kept checking up on the protestors, took us up in his chopper to film some amazing aerial footage of the Festival, and did "fly by's" circling around the picketers to help draw attention to the protest. All in all, it was a great success. Better than I could have expected. I hope to see you there next year.

I just finished sending out the first Utah Boys Ranch Network Newsletter - so I thought I'd share a few excerpts and invite anyone interested to join the mailing list. Just send me a PM - or send an email to utahboysranchnetwork@alumni.com to be included.

**Announcements**

We are pleased to announce many updates to www.mormongulag.com and the Utah Boys Ranch Network:

* The 17th annual Scarecrow Festival protest was a great success. We had a large number of protesters show up to picket, pass out flyers, and talk to festival patrons. One major donor completely withdrew funding after speaking with us, and many other families changed their mind and left the festival. There are photographs on the website now, and more to come - as well as video footage - in the near future. At www.mormongulag.com click "Utah Boys Ranch Pictures" to see them.

* We've optimized the formatting to ensure a presence on major search engines with the keywords "Utah Boys Ranch" "West Ridge Academy" and "Mormon Gulag" -- so let us know if you see any improvement in your searches.

* We've added several new Testimonials or "Horror Stories" to the website. There are 8 horror stories now - one was sent by a former staff member. Be sure to go to www.mormongulag.com and then click on "Utah Boys Ranch Testimonials" and then click "More Horror Stories" at the bottom for the complete list.

* Several updates to the "Legal Issues & Bad Press" section of www.mormongulag.com:
The Scarecrow Festival Protest Flyer is up for viewing. We also located court records for two cases involving the Utah Boys Ranch - one a $10 million sexual molestation lawsuit, another a sexual harassment lawsuit - that are definitely worth checking out.

*A few updates were made to the "Utah Boys Ranch Program" portion of the website - and some other minor changes were made to other sections of the site. One change was the removal of a staff member's name who was implicated in one of the "Horror Stories." His name was not removed simply because he contacted us. He provided compelling evidence that indicated that the author of the testimonial and mistaken him for another staff member (who looked like him and had a similar name). In good faith, and on our own accord, we removed it.

*Be sure to check the website frequently, as it is constantly being updated.

There is much more to the newsletter, if you're interested.
