As one of the nevermos I guess I should respond:

I'd say anyone who posts for thousands of posts is probably a bit lonely in real life. I was for a long while. Of course that loneliness could be mental as much as physical. If you lack mental intimacy you might look for people who are interested in the things you are via the Net, even while having plenty of physical company. I think people look to fill voids in their lives, and if they aren't getting it at home they leave their home [via the computer] for a place that fulfills their need. And sometimes you just need to hang out somewhere. Alot of my participation on this board was hanging out with people I consider friends to fill that void as I moved through a tough stretch in my life.

Perhaps this board is their only social structure?

I'll only answer for myself. For a long time it was a fairly large part of my social structure. Sadly. Or not so much. For a long time I was depressed and didn't want to go out in the physical world due to feeling sorry for myself and lack of energy and whatnot so I went out in the cyber world. I met a lot of cool cats on this silly board. Now I"m not around so much. In a way that sucks, cause I miss alot of them. But it runs in cycles I guess. Sometimes you get tired of a place, so you unplug and go do something else. I guess that's what I've been doing.

Or...dig this, you might like emptying the contents of an overly intellectually stimulating day from your head.

In other words, I am one that works my intellectual ass off each and every day.

Definitely.

The assertion of "loneliness" in Porter's OP was intended as a direct affront to me. He's apparently too superificial in this thinking to know that the same could be said for any given poster on any given board.

Though I've come across many a depressed, disabled, housebound poster on boards like this, in no way do I consider participation on a board like this as my "social structure" (he meant network).

A board like this is something I do with my brain as an outlet for what I do with my brain in my in real life work which is incredibly demanding, with the real exception of those times when I'm snowed in up to my eyeballs in which case it's definitely a link to the outside world!

I have to admit I have never understood anyone's motives for attacking any religion. I have sometimes thought that they viewed themselves as some sort of crusader against evil, but I abandoned that thought because there were always signs of schadenfreude intermixed with their posts.
Since then I have hit upon the idea that attacking any religion on the internet is the expression of some inner unrest. For those who post long and hard there is sometimes camaraderie and validation to be found in this mutual expression of inner unrest or anxiety.

This is of course my explanation for my own understanding only. I will leave more serious psychoanalysis to Wade Englund.

My own belief system has me according almost all posters, respect and dignity whatever there position (unless of course they are hitting me).

I missed an implied specific poster, but I have not been here that long. I hope no-one thinks I was implying that Jersey Girl is a cyber train-spotter.

A wee while ago, my sister invited me to join a specific chat on her 'Pet Shop Boys' board. I was so fascinated I ended up signing up and posting for ages. I wouldn't know the Pet Shop Boys from 50Cent.
