I tend to think there have been atheist presidents ..
Perhaps Johnson, Kennedy,Roosevelt and maybe even Nixon who feigned religion for political purposes.
I had high hopes W might have been such. I am sad to conclude he is not. Frankly the religious can have him.

God has the right to create and to destroy, to make like and to kill. He can delegate this authority if he wishes to. I know that can be scary. Deal with it.

Thomas Jefferson was a very liberal form of theist. Almost a deist, but not quite.
An open atheist president seems to be a long ways off, and is effectively impossible in our current political climate. A nominally religious person who probably is an nonbeliever in private has a chance at being president at any given point. Howard Dean is the last highly probable suspect for one of those who put on a credible run, I think.
